You should try to emulate watercolour without a tool.

It's really easy. Hardness 90, opacity 15 - 90, limit of about 45 on size. Don't shade with black and white, but rather pick a darker/lighter shade and do a more severe opacity; as if you had to mix a new color every time.

Once you understand more about the brush tools and color, you can develop a much more detailed and advanced style.

Boxdog is black and white. Having her in color wouldn't be the same. Also, I can't use Photoshop due to it not accepting my broken tablet pen, but I appreciate the recommendation nevertheless. V:

You use a tablet? I use a razer deathadder. Try shading with the mouse, it's not as hard as drawing with it.

I'm fairly decent with both mouse and tablet, but my mouse isn't in a reliable state at the moment. It's partly faulty itself and has a mind of it's own, being intermittent. : <
