You are right, he is more like hurt.
I've worked with small children that age and there were a few ones that had just asumed that they were bad kids - as their parents told them so, just because they missbehaved at a certain point - and because of that, they were always bad-mouthing and such.
I think the best thing for raising children is positive reinforcement, making them feel loved :)
