From what I recall, the backstory was it was supposed to be a horn and singer combination, but they showed up drunk as skunks, and their "recording session" quickly degenerated into the mayhem on the record.
It gets less creepy when you hear that, and goes straight over into "hilarity."

It actually reflected some of the real circumstances of the Laughing Record, too. The psychiatrist and his nurse were pretty obviously drunk as skunks. It's long been written that that's how the record came to be: A trombonist and his vocalist were supposed to record a sort of pilot recording, but showed up completely zotzed. The Laughing Record is the result.
