Blythe also got a test run of her body shader! I discussed the gamma and color correction in the last post. Oddly enough, unlike any other case, for Blythe's baseline she looks best as she initially appears in the VRay Frame Buffer (upper left). But, nothing else does. A happy medium has been settled on 1.5 gamma correction as seen in the upper right.
Fur presents its own challenges, just as it did with Mental Ray. However, it's even easier to adjust the renderer to suit fur than Mental Ray. I have a choice of secondary GI parameters. The best looking, lower left, is the photon map and like using photons on fur in Mental Ray it is incredibly slow. That one took 24 minutes. There are likely tweaks I can apply to improve this. Brute Force secondary was second best and the fastest at 3 minutes. It is in the lower right, but I'm using a different gamma setting at the same time. Light cache doesn't look that good to me, but it is recommended (and 2nd fastest compared to no secondary) so maybe there are tweaks that can improve it.
While VRay fur is a lot better than Maya fur in a number of ways, it is unfortunately very limited in others. I have determined there is no way to hook it into nHair, so it's stuck being static. :( I also had several difficulties getting fur to render in the first place and still have not successfully made nHair or VRay's hair shader with nHair to show up. Near as I can tell, it should be perfectly straight forward. I'm not sure what the problem is. But, I did get a little example scene off the internet that at least renders. Can't create nHair and have it render yet, though. My be some undocumented demo limitation.
