1) You can load the full resolution version of the image from the beginning. For slower internet connections, you'll see the top of the image load in, first, and have line after line of pixels below it load in, until you get the full, complete image.

2) You can load a slightly lower resolution version of the image first, and add more detail as it is downloaded. For slower connections, you'll see the full sized image load in, but very pixilated. Over time, it will progressively become more clear as the rest of the image is downloaded, until you have the complete image.
When you use the latter of the two to create a picture, you are said to "Interlace" the image, and I would assume AcidGrunt interlaces their art. It's just a different way of having your computer load it from FA's servers. If you'd like more information, Google, "Adam7 Interlacing" and you should see a few good resources on the subject.
