Recently, Target Stores opened up 'a can of worms' by selling holiday sweaters that say "O.C.D. = Obsessive Christmas Disorder" - which, in certain cases, was deemed offensive to some people who suffer from O.C.D. (which really means Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - a condition shared IRL by my brother Glenn and myself).
Of course, poking fun at illnesses by giving the initials an alternate meaning is nothing new. I recall an old "Three Stooges" short in which 'Moe' tries to help 'Curly' get dressed - which led to the following exchange...
'Moe': "I'd get this belt on you, if you weren't suffering from T.B."
'Curly': "T.B.?"
'Moe': "Yeah, T.B.... Two Bellies!"
I'd found the dialogue highly amusing, even though (as a kid) I had no idea that T.B. was really the initials for Tuberculosis (a very serious disease).
These 'initial reactions' (no pun intended) inspired me to create a brand new T-shirt for 'Bor-Bor Bear' to wear in my latest "Front & Back: Fat Furry Edition" comic gag. In reality P.T.S.D. stands for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (a condition usually suffered by retired members of our armed forces, as well as the police and firefighters). Hopefully, my alternate definition of P.T.S.D. will not offend anybody...

Ironically, the disorder known as AIDS came out around the same time a chocolate-flavored dietary supplement called AYDS came out on the market. The company that made said supplement was worried about sales of their product. Personally, I don't know what's the hassle; both AIDS and AYDS are guaranteed to make one lose a lot of weight!
