Her fingers clicked away at record paces on the lame new laptop her parents had bought to celebrate a full week without detention. She was quickly growing tired of living in this shack of a house, having only two bedrooms for herself and one bathroom. Memories of horse-drawn rides to her old school and the grand, winding halls of her prior castle haunted her each night. She was above this place, she deserved better.
But despite all of her wants and desires, she knew that she was better than the other girls who she attended classes with. And this, her masterpiece that she had clacked and clicked away on seemingly endlessly for the past fifteen minutes would be her way of cementing her superiority in all of their minds. The name Zoe Superior would echo through the halls as the grand processions welcomed her to school the next day and oh how sweet it would be.
Just as she lay her head down to rest that night on her wonderfully fluffy pillow embroidered with her own majestic likeness, she thought she saw a flash of pink just out of her field of vision—but, she thought, it must have been her imagination—she was so very creative after all.
Now that the boastful princess had laid her head down for the night, the real fun could begin. Pink Star could taste it—every prideful thought and emotion which even now radiated from her sleeping form. It was delicious, but it would not satiate its hunger. With her unwitting help, Pink Star would soon be the greatest and most powerful being on the planet; nothing would be able to stand before its glorious satiated form.
Pink Star walked in high struts toward the still-running laptop and eyed it excitedly, the radiating colorful orb above its head responding to the words typed so arrogantly on the school message board:
"Zoe Superior, student of Richton High, has used her judgment to compile a list of each student in the school’s attractiveness and intelligence, each one ranked from 1-100."
The foolish girl had ranked herself perfect in each category with no other student at the all-girl school ranked as high as 20 in either one. It was almost more than Pink Star could handle, the stagnant midnight air of the girl’s room flaring in and out of the holes where a mouth would be in anticipation for the meal she would consume tomorrow.
But—for now, it would rest just as the girl did. Soon, Pink Star told itself, soon her soul would belong to it.
When she woke up the next morning, Zoe held her head up high. She had never felt more proud of herself in her life. She had finally done it, she had reached the peak of popularity—she has published for all of her peers to see what she had always known.
She glanced over with a broad, perfect smile etched on her face to see the clock flash 6:00AM to her leaving plenty of time for her morning deeds. Zoe, as with many other things, had perfected her morning ritual to get everything done in twenty minutes flat. This left her more than ample time to observe her work and herself in the mirror for a bit under a full hour.
In front of the mirror, she shot herself look after look, practicing for her big day at school. Everyone would want to see her with her best smile on, after all. She finally decided on her head tilted ever so slightly upward to go along with a close-lipped grin. On her way out, once again she thought she saw a pink blur, this time in the mirror—for a moment she thought she was going crazy, but reason soon took over. She could not be losing her mind, which was after all perhaps the most stable and sane mind every to exist.
Pink Star followed the pretentious child all the way to her school, trotting hastily behind. After the girl’s breakfast she stopped for a moment to hear the concerned conversation exchanged by her parents.
“Maybe—maybe we shouldn’t have let her go,” her mother glanced nervously at her father to accompany the words, but he shook his head in reply.
“She needs to learn this lesson somehow, that girl’s pride is out of control. Nothing we say will matter—she has to learn her lesson from her peers.”
Pink Star gave a chuckle and continued in a full Clydesdale-esque style. Their daughter would be learning no lesson today if she could see to it.
Just as she had expected, every eye was on her when she arrived at school. She held her unwavering smile the entire time. It was spectacular; they stared at her almost unblinkingly while she gave each one an approving nod, to affirm that it was indeed okay to observe their greatest peer this way.
And now to top it all off, her best friend whom she had even graciously invited over to her house one time was walking up to quickly, her arms pumping to the side.
“What do you think, Beth? Am I great or am I great?” Zoe said with a large grin spreading across her face with a hand placed firmly on her hip.
Beth flared her nostrils and shouted in her face, “I HAVE TOLERATED YOU UNTIL NOW, ZOE. BUT YOU JUST CROSSED THE LINE. I NEVER WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN.”
This was the moment. Pink Star could feel the pompous girl’s soul begging to be devoured in this moment, but it needed to be primed.
The Sin could see into the girls’ mind—the struggle between pride and humility raging on while her friend turned her back and walked away. Pink Star had to be sure she would choose the pinnacle of pride she could accomplish, egging her ego onward.
“Jealous child,” Zoe said just loudly enough for Beth to hear, “If you can’t see what I am, what I am bound to be—then I don’t need you. Later.”
Zoe waved halfheartedly at her former friend and walked away with no thought on her mind but her own greatness.
Pink Star stood on all fours, invisible to the pathetic humans and triumphant. The girl’s soul, in that moment of its greatest pride, had been enough to satiate her—for now. One day, it would consume enough of these petty creatures to reach its full splendor—but for now it would go on, feasting, and leaving behind empty shells devoid of any thought or emotion with exception to pompous, foolhardy pride.
