Yak Shaving is a euphamism for a daisychain of things you have to do before you can do the thing you actually wanted/needed to accomplish. So, setting out to change the oil in your car led to a logical chain of events resulting in you (at least metaphorically) shaving a yak on the tibetan plateau, to stuff a pillow to, to, to ... finally get the damned oil changed.
