Starlight Eight (Book 2 Chapter 33)

Starlight Eight
About a day later, after the events in the south. The group was resting inside of the hotel room in Starlight, with Smithy's arms crossed at the door "Alright, Max, RD are you both ready to go to the arena. It's you and six other guys left in the tournament. It won't be as easy as before. The weak have been weeded out."
RD got up and stretched "I'm set, I'm not going to be going at this guns blazing, it might work on digimon who are slower or have weaker defenses but it won't work here"
Smithy nodded "It'll be all the more difficult once you learn the rules for the finals." Max pulled himself up, following Smithy out of the door.
RD winced as he followed Max, he was still in his dracomon form and had digested his massive meal from last night.
Smithy took a deep breath, taking them to the arena, where the crowd was already buzzing with excitement. The other six contestants looking vaugly unfamiliar, Max cringed when he realized why. four of them were ULTIMATES! Triceramon, which RD was already familiar with as Max's grandfather's alter ego. Callismon, which was a massive purple furred bear with a massive gun equipped on his right paw and gut wrenching claws in the other. A Grapleomon, which looked to be a more technological leomon who's body was nearly entirely covered in armor, a white visor covering his forehead, and rotating Turbines spinning along his four limbs. The last ultimate and not least, a Wargrowlmon that looked oddly impatient. Blade stood just infront of Triceramon, apologizing for wounding him the other day. And the last unknown combatant, a Dorugamon that moved and acted suspiciously enough like Doru.
"Why are there ultimates here in a champion or lower tourney" RD muttered irritated "I thought they weren't supposed to be here"
Smithy chuckled "I told you...the rules for the finals are different. Just wait in the arena for the official announcement." With that, Smithy walked over to the commentators stand beside Dorulumon, the tourny's organizer, the Leomon picked up the Mic then spoke in a big booming voice. "Alright everyone! Welcome to the final rounds of the Starlight tournament! As everyone knows, we had two seperate competitions this year! One for the rookies and champions and the other for the ultimates! We wanted to make sure the strongest of each made it to the finals. Knowing now which rookies and champions can stand against the ultimates so that it could truely be a worthwhile battle. As such...the remaining finalists of the lower grade have been promoted! And the finals will consist of those remaining in one on one elimination matches."
RD groaned, all of the opponents he faced were either rookie or champion level, he didn't think he'd have to face ultimate level digimon, but it didn't matter as he waited.
Smithy took some time to take a breather, before grinning. "I have no doubt each of these brilliant rookies have shown they belong with the best of the best! Which is why each one will be pitted against an ultimate! Our first match up consisting of!" He turned his head towards a holo screen, with the eight contestants slidding through the image like a slot machine, the first selection consisted of RD, and the second setting him up against Callismon.
RD groaned as he saw that, with the gun and claws Callismon could fight both at close and long range, on the plus side at the very least he was the first match up.
Smithy chuckled as the slots continued to reveal the matches thereafter. Blade was matched up against the Wargrowlmon, Dorugamon was up against Grapleomon and last but not least, made Smithy himself cringe as Max was selected to face off against Triceramon "There you have it! We have the match selections for today! All contestants please go back in the waiting area aside from RD and Callismon!"
The remaining six nodded, walking out of the arena to give the two some fighting space. Callismon grinned, stepping over to RD and holding his claws out "I was watching your matches, I hope you show me your best."
RD blushed and shook claws with his opponant. "Well I didn't see yours, you must've finished them quickly"
Callismon chuckled at that "Maybe. I don't like bragging. So are you going to fight as a Dracomon or will you be digivolving?" He asked with a big grin.
"Depends, I may digivolve when the heat is turned up" RD shrugged "But this form is easier to move around in"
Callismon nodded, grinning "In that case let's give the crowd what Smithy promised them!" He backed up, giving RD enough space between them, then lifting up his arm gun, firing a few rounds in RD's direction
RD easily jumped and flipped over them as he closed the gap, he then summoned a light sword, he then thought about what chronomon did, hopefully over the course of this fight he could make it solid.
Callismon smirked, slamming his claws into the arena floor itself, sending great quakes that would shake the entire building rather violently.
RD winced as he leaped very high, surprisingly the more he concentrated the more solid the sword felt, he then threw the sword, the goal was simple, jam the arm cannon so that Callismon would be forced into close combat
Callismon stared up at RD, smirking at his plan, he quickly removed his claws from the ground and caught RD's sword in his bare paw, a few sparks of light coming off the collision "Don't underestimate me."
RD blinked, he wondered if he could alter the sword's shape, but doing that from this distance would be crazy, he didn't have much choice as he snapped his fingers, causing his sword to function very much like a hand grenade and shrapnel flew everywhere
Callismon grunted, waving away a bit of the smoke that came from the grenade, his arm was slightly charred but he took this opportunity and aimed his gun forward, closing his eyes "Ever wonder how I lived to become ultimate? I'll give you a hint, I was nearly deleted..." He then growled, firing a trio of bullets through the thick smoke, two of which managed to smack RD in the gut, non fatilly thankfully as they just seemed to explode on contact.
RD winced as he put his light shield up "Wow so you learned from that experience, but how were you nearly deleted?"
"Ever heard of the digimon known as Arkadimon?" He took a deep breath, waiting for the smoke to clear then opened his ruby red eyes, looking almost feral as he growled out every word. "He devoured nearly all of my data. I was scared for my life, my comrades all stripped of their data one by one, and the only reason I survived was because the ground beneath me caved in when I was but a Grizzlymon."
RD made a light cannon of his own, firing a few cannon balls in Callismon's direction. "I've heard of him from a digimon in the South...Supposed to be one frightening beast. Also capable of interdimensional travel from what I hear."
Callismon growled, shaking his head as he felt the cannon slam into him, but managed to shake it off. "He's a very dastardly digimon. I doubt he even has a soul and frankly? I hope you never have to meet him. I grew up in a harsh digital world, I had to either get stronger or die!" He grunted, feeling the cannonball slam into his form, he simply shook it off then stepped forward, firing several rounds towards RD.
RD's nimble form was obviously causing problems, he actually didn't seem to care "? Either way it sounds like you were at the area we just left a day ago, do you know chronomon? A really nice fellow...Probably could have saved you."
Callismon nodded a few times, watching RD skip about "I've heard of him. I never made it to his sanctuary however." Callismon took a deep breath, closing his eyes "But Arkadimon actually did me a favor. It doesn't matter what region you're in. This world will eat you alive if you let it, nevermind the high lords. Arkadimon taught me the harsh truth, though it's not a complete truth I guess. I came to this region finding that there was hardly any strife." He aimed his gun in RD's direction, aiming straight at the rookie's next destination. "But I perservered and became stronger. Perhaps strong enough to avenge my friends."
RD blinked as he realized that Callismon was leading the target! This was a skill most experienced shooters used, rather than shoot at where the target is they shoot where they predict their target to be at! RD blinked as he set up a wall and then started pushing it, why he didn't do this in the first place he couldn't tell. Was he going easy on him?
Callismon's lips curled into a snarl "Maybe I'm foolish, maybe I'm giving into my anger but it made me a better fighter because of it." Callismon charged forward, his paws shaking the arena itself as each step forward caused the foundation to chip and crack, he lifted his bare claws, and jammed them into the wall RD created, after a couple seconds it actually started breaking through "Don't take me lightly dragon." He grumbled, his claw slashing into RD's chest, leaving a pretty wide gash that left data pouring out.
RD cringed, running a paw over his wound, but then grinned. "I'm not" RD revealed that the wall he used was a cover to get in close, now Callismon has a very solid, very IMMOVABLE hunk jammed into his cannon, if he tried to remove it with the claws on his other hand he'd destroy the barrel and the cannon along with it, if he tried to use the cannon it just might blow his whole arm off.
Callismon blinked as the barrel was sealed off by RD's power, before he growled, bringing his cannon point blank to RD "I don't care how durable your light attribute attacks are! I'm damn sure a point blank attack would damage the both of us." He looked completely serious, willing to mutilate himself to make a point, the cannon glowing bright red.
RD shook his head "You get riled up way too easily" RD put the light in his legs and planted them into Callismon's midsection, effortlessly jumping all the way to the other side of the arena before the cannon could blow
Callismon grinned as he heard that, groaning as those legs pounded into his gut, still he managed to stay in place. "Gotcha." Suddenly his gun cooled down, using his bare claws he managed to slash apart the light barrier, he even set his gun arm under a paw and smashed the light cage and his gun arm to pieces* "I'll say it again. Don't take me lightly." Steam blew from his nostrils "Besides..." He took a deep breath, grinning. "You didn't think all those stray bullets were really stray did you? I'm willing to break as many layers of muscle, bone or even what little data is left, to prove my point.
RD smirked "No no I didn't everytime I make a defensive maneuver you act as if i'm underestimating you, I'm not, I know you have a lot of experience with that cannon, every shot was aiming right where I was going to be, in other words you were leading the target. Secondly you showed the power in your claws by slamming them hard enough into the ground to cause earthquakes, the problem is" RD smirked as he exerted himself to create a thick fieldwide floor of light that stuck callismon's paws in the ground "Defensive moves can be used to set a person up....speaking of which look up" RD pointed upwards, every single piece of light that had been broken during the fight had now been condensed into a massive light ball....it was roughly the size of a bowling ball and being condensed would probably smack callismon solidly but that wasn't RD's plan as he broke the floor himself causing the extra light to go into the orb and causing it to triple in size. He then hopped up to it and kicked it as hard as he could at callismon.
Callismon growled low "You're a fool if you think this will be enough to knock me out!!!" He charged head on at the orb of light, his paw turning white hot as it charged into the ball.
The ball exploded on impact when Callismon hit it, which was probably RD's intention all along as it made a massive blinding flash, making it impossible to see what happened next. by the time the flash faded RD was standing behind callismon, holding his other paw in his hand which he had lopped off in the confusion.
Callismon panted a bit, turning to look at RD with a dazed expression, he grinned at RD, though most of his body was seared from the attack. "I think you took it a little bit out of proportion."
"no you would've gotten me easily otherwise" RD said as he tossed the paw to the side "There is a problem though. you act like a villain, not a hero. you rush into things without thinking first and you try to brute force just about everything, the only time you didn't was when you were using your cannon. Did you think I could KO you with an orb that tiny? Honestly it'd have to be the size of the arena at least to be a one hit KO, it was obviously a setup and you walked right into it." RD shook his head as he strode up "Power is good but the knowledge to use that power and the skill to use it is even more important" RD began making a box around Callismon with his light then he began compressing it, there was very obvious strain as RD focused all of his power to do this, muscles straining themselves. By the time he was finished the box was roughly the size of an ice cube, which RD happily popped into his mouth, his body then instantly bloating as the box broke due to callismon's power and size.
"I think that's the game folks! The winner i-" Smithy started, then blinked as he looked over RD's tiny form.
Callismon wiggled inside of RD's body, before strangely, his mass started breaking apart, almost as if he'd never been eaten in the first place. Scattered pieces of shrapnel and cannon fire forming together, creating what looked to be a completely reconstructed Callismon, who simply took a deep breath, huffing "I told you not to underestimate me. I act like a villian in your eyes because you can't see the difference between black and white." He dusted a bit of gunpowder off his shoulder and aimed his now completely reconstructed arm canon squarely at RD "You saw my strategy as blind rage rather than a setup. I admit I fell for yours but you never expected mine. I'm not made of data! Or at least not all of me is. I set you up right from the get go when this battle started."
RD blinked, he figured that this was how Callismon beat all of those others but he smirked as he set up a wall but then made it have rubberized properties, instead of breaking the wall, the wall bounced the cannonball back at Callismon.
Callismon smirked, looking over RD, ducking to the side as the cannonball was sucked back into his body, being pulled in by some sort of suction. "You're saving the brunt of your force for Blade. I'll tell you a secret. After each round, the winning competitors are sent into a healing pod. Any energy expended will be available to you next round. So you can digivolve resting easy should you win." He panted "For me, I'm not made of data anymore so such a pod would be ineffective."
"Wait are you saying that if you're deleted here that's it?!?" RD was horrified. RD looked down "No, no because I will not let that happen, if I destroyed you it would go against everything I stood for, I was very careful about this, there's still some part of you that's made of data? Let's find it and preserve it!" RD didn't know what was coming over him but he just let it work as a light beam erupted from his body, boy was he feeling tired but the beam wasn't offensive, it was a spotlight, it shone over Callismon's body, if there was even the smallest bit of him that was made of data it would find it.
Callismon shook his head "I'm already a ghost." He looked down. "Living only on small strips of data, digimon that are deleted, I gather into my body. It's my food and water." He then blinked as he felt the beam of light envelope him "I don't kill my opponants either. But my body naturally devours broken pieces of data. A gift and a curse Arkadimon left behind."
RD sighed, crossing his arms. "For a ghost you're strong, but honestly you need to go, not through deletion but the amount of data you have has to be enough to make at least one digiegg" RD kept the spotlight shining, and then he found it, but it was only the tiniest amount of callismon's footpaw.....he didn't have much of an inkling but he wasn't sure that was enough to make a digiegg.
Callismon growled a bit "I won't reconvert into a digiegg." He pointed out, snarling. "Not until I can have my vengance. I'll be willing to compromise though." He narrowed his eyes "If you can knock this body down, then I will happily forfeit. I...need to devour more data before I can be reborn."
RD sighed and nodded "So be it, brace yourself" RD didn't like what he was hearing from this callismon, a digi-ghost born on vengeance? Sounded like something from a comic book, he wasn't sure he could knock Callismon over even if he put all of his light powers behind all of his body parts but it was the only way to get through with his morals intact.
Callismon narrowed his eyes a bit, grumbling "Digivolve...I won't be satisfied unless I lose to a digimon of champion or greater. If I lose, I want to retain my pride." He protested and insisted.
RD sighed, he always wanted to solve some problems WITHOUT digivolving but sometimes just to satisfy people he had to make exceptions, and besides if he was inflexible on that it might get him nailed down the road as he digivolved to coredramon and charged forward.
Callismon, nodded, taking a deep breath before charging headlong at RD, his paw grappling with RD's, though given he only had one paw and the other a gun he was at a bit of a disadvantage head on, so he brought his gun to bear, trying to aim at RD's gut.
RD twisted and then used his light powers to elongate his tail, sweeping it hard underneath Callismon.
Callismon blinked, falling slightly and shooting a couple shots over RD's shoulder with a growl "Damn it!" He spat out.
RD took advantage of this and charged forward putting as much light power into his legs so he could push Callismon over more
Callismon's eyes went wide, snarling as he pushed back with RD, trying to keep himself firmly in the ring, the heel of his foot sliding just outside of the safe zone
This was it. Even now RD's muscles ached at him to stop, and his reserves of light energy were nearly tapped out. Now was as good a place as any, so he unloaded the last of his light, producing a small shock wave between the two of them. Knocking him on his butt and Callismon backward out of the ring.
Callismon gasped, tip toeing one last bit, commedically hovering in midair for a moment, before falling out of bounds, a growl coming from his body as the crowd started cheering
RD sat backwards, completely wiped from the sheer amount of light power he had to fling around, that was....crazy. "Barbamon didn't push me half as hard...Can there really be people as strong as the demon lords?"
Callismon took a deep breath, pulling himself up and walking over to RD, his glowing red eyes showed that he might indeed be angry at RD, but rather than go full on nuclear, he picked up the dragon and started carting him off "I'll take you to the pod myself..."
"Thanks, you....get mad easily....is it because you wanted your revenge on that arkadimon? Sadly I don't even know where he might be anyways"
Callismon grumbled a bit "It's more about my pride as silly as it sounds. Losing to a rookie...made me feel like all of my training and struggling to survive was for nothing."
"Well you should be happy that I evolved to champion" RD panted out, wincing as he was getting sleepy and started rubbing his one good paw.
Callismon nodded a few times "and thank you for that. I have nothing against rookies. But you showed me I might still have a ways to go." He narrowed his eyes, growling under his breath "I hope you never have to suffer through what I've gone through. I hear them you know...the fragmented data of deleted digimon as my body devours it...I don't know how Arkadimon can stand it."
"because he might enjoy it as crazy as that sounds...there are certain insane digimon out there"RD cringed, trying to stay awake.
Callismon nodded, walking over to a pretty spacious looking pod, starting to fit RD into it "It might be attributing to my anger. I just want the voices to stop."
"And you say you can't rest until he's defeated?" RD asked
Callismon nodded a few times "That's how it works...he has the data of my friends. If I can defeat him, and absorb him using his own dirty tricks, maybe I can save them."
"But what if you can't? Sorry for asking but there's always that possibility" RD shrugged as he went into the pod sighing.
Callismon cringed when he heard that "then I'll join them...I just want to right the wrongs he's commited. If the last of me becomes a light snack then at least I'll go knowing I did my best."
RD nodded "Well this is done for today, I need to rest. whew...I hope Max can make it through his match in one piece...given his opponant."
Callismon nodded, closing the pod and setting it to auto recovery "Maybe...I'll treat ya when you wake up. The pod should also restore your missing limb."
RD was starting to fall asleep but smiled "I look forward to it"
Back in the waiting room, Max was clinging to Dorugamon's back, crawling up to his head. "Hey...when were you gonna tell me you were in the tournament too?! You and Were made it sound like you were just spectators..."
Doru laughed, craning his neck around to meet Max's gaze. "I requested it. If anything...nobody would expect a royal knight being involved in the tournament. And since I'm not exactly at full power it isn't illegal. I'm just glad we won't have to face each other quite yet." He donned a more serious look and spoke quietly. "Listen, your opponant. Considering you're scheduled to battle last, is Triceramon. He was training with RD specifically for the ability to control light and darkness. Triceramon is the one digimon, that even your friend couldn't defeat. He's an ultimate with a body that's as hard as chrome digizoid. So he's way above the power level of his own species. Be careful..."
Max nodded, taking a deep breath. "Well that just adds to the challenge. I look forward to facing him."
Blade was sitting to the side of the waiting room. He opted to rest against a bare, featureless wall while the rest of the finalist sat on the cushiony couches. He took his Saberleomon sword out of it's casing and used it as a prop to pull himself up, starting to step out to the arena. Wargreymon following behind them as they heard the booming voice of Smithy announcing their battle commencing.
Max grinned, sliding off Doru's long dragonic body and opening up a holo screen on his digivice, bloating it up to it's largest size so they could both watch the coming battle in comfort. "For once I can watch Blade up close. And it'll give me a chance to see how my digivolution would have gone had I went the traditional method..."
Doru nodded, grinning as he gave Max a small lick, it got a groan out of Max but they shared a laugh shortly thereafter. The Dorugamon leaned down until he was flat on his stomach and watched the upcoming battle with Max.

Suddenly his gun cooled down, using his bare claws he managed to slash apart the light barrier, he even set his gun arm under a paw and smashed the light cage and his gun arm to pieces* "I'll say it again.
