I think originally when I thought up his flower it was a made up blood phage something or other.
I've come across the Osiria Rose ( http://i.imgur.com/H49kDJD.png ) since then and found that to be a better match.
His markings are also based on a butterfly's patterns as well ( http://images.fineartamerica.com/im.....ehndiratta.jpg )

The real trick is in mixing insect and plant markings with other animalia that wouldn't normally have those colorations or markings without making it look gaudy.
The jakarta are a huge design challenge, but I really don't want that to scare people off from creating their own.
