It was supposed to be a fun birthday at the beach, but somewhere between using taller friends' muzzles as diving boards and exploring a kelp forest, Otter had gotten terribly lost off the coast.

Paddling against waves taller than he was got him nothing but battered and tired. Diving beneath the waves though - afforded him much greater clarity. He could see the seaweed below and the slow curve of the sandy silt and coral clusters. He even met the gaze of a seal rooting around the silt for something.

Ultramarine eyes peered out at him. She waved a flipper. He waved a paw. She licked her chops. He let a bubble of air from an underwater "eep" escape. She started toward him and he decided the surface wasn't all that bad - paddling as fast as he could as he glanced back and wished he hadn't.
