Ahh Chara. Now I have a face to associate with every time I've wondered:
What happens if you finish Starfox with all your wingmen dead?
What happens if you slaughter Lord Vivec in Morrowind?
What happens if you kill the Battery Park metro hostages in Deus Ex?
To me, Chara is less an evil force and more a force without shackles, bound only by imagination and time.
Bored only by stagnation and conforming to expectations.
Hate Chara if you wish, but they are the embodiment of even the most innocent queries of; "what if?..."
Chara is the epitome of replay value and whose spirit burns brighter with every world brought to salvation only to be plunged back into darkness just to enjoy the ride one. more. time.

Oh, I just said that in the broad sense regarding dislike of Chara. It's common to think of Chara as someone who simply does destructive things but I was thinking; is it really any less manipulative to reset a world even just to get a different good ending? Imagine meeting a stranger that knew everything about you simply because they found a way to earn your trust in some alternate timeline. Every interaction they have with you is just a way to explore another way to tug your strings and see how you react. Every victory you celebrate with them was already a known quantity and they are really just humoring you as they go through the motions themselves.
Chara represents the inquisitive player, amused by the world but only transiently invested in it. From this perspective, Frisk is just another pawn on a chessboard.
