This is a composition for Concert Band, inspired by Gliese 436 b, nicknamed the Planet of Burning Ice due to a solid mass of liquid that is hot enough to boil away, but kept solid by pressure. This was composed as my senior composition project submitted for my graduation requirement. It is for full concert band instrumentation: Piccolo, Flute I and II, Oboe, Bassoon I and II, Clarinet in Bb I II and III, Bass Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Bari Sax, Trumpet in Bb I II III and IV, Horn in F, Trombone, Tuba and 5 percussion parts (consisting of Timpani, Bass Drum, Snare, Bells, Chimes, Xylo, Crotales, Suspended Cymbal, Tom Tom, Tam Tam, Triangle, Temple Blocks, tambourine and Crash Cymbals).
The piece consists of four sections that represent different aspects of the planet, from the mysterious orange and brown swirling exterior to a turbulent inner layer. This was composed in Finale and played back using CineBrass CORE, CineSymphony LITE, and Garritan Personal Orchestra. MIDI does not really do it justice though. This will be played live and when it is I will have a link! Enjoy!
