"Photo-Op: Comic Strip Classics Stamps/Boca Raton, FL" #1
For my latest 'sweeps month' (November, 2015) I have an extremely special selection of 'photo-ops' to present on this latest "Throwback Thursday"...
In Boca Raton, Florida, on October 1, 1995 (over twenty years ago), I had the rare opportunity of attending a very special ceremony - held under a tent in between the local post office and the site of the (yet-to-be-opened) International Museum of Cartoon Art. For that was the first day of issue for a special series of postage stamps, honoring 'Comic Strip Classics' - from the turn of the 20th Century to 1950.
And, since November 15, 2015 celebrates the 100th anniversary of the formation of King Features Syndicate, I couldn't think of a better way to honor the funny pages than with a special series of 'photo-ops' I had taken at said ceremony...
Needless to say, a number of comic strips depicted on the sheet of postage stamps come from King Features Syndicate - include "The Yellow Kid", "The Katzenjammer Kids", "Krazy Kat", "Popeye", "Blondie", "Flash Gordon", and "Prince Valiant".
You can find out more about said USPS stamps by going to Wikipedia and type out "Comic Strip Classics Stamps". And I'll have more 'photo-ops' from the special ceremony, later on during "Throwback Thursday"...
