Endless Realms bestiary - Qorbani
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
The art director wanted me to come up with some more angel concepts, so this is one of the chances I got to create my own creature - this time, I picked the theme of sacrifice, inspired by religious concepts such as the weeping Buddha, Christ's crucifixion, and spiritual asceticism. Although it may not look it, here we have an angelic being whose entire purpose is to suffer so that others don't have to - eyes removed, mouth sewn shut, unable to be killed, and forever bound to carry the burden of a barrel of its own tears and blood, the Qorbani wanders creation, alleviating the suffering of those around it by taking damage unto itself and healing wounds by offering others its body's essence it carries with it. However, it should be noted that the angel is motivated to merely reduce suffering and end pain in the world - sometimes, what the Qorbani offers instead will be a merciful end. While it cannot be killed through physical violence nor age, it may be convinced to sacrifice its own life to save another's.

This is an interesting concept. I feel sorry for this angle having to wonder the world blind and being unable to speak. It looks so frail to. Would anything special happen if you tried to heal it since it looks to be in pain? I'd be the person to try and help it by at least trying to feed the poor thing.
*nods* His life is not what I would call a happy one, although I suspect he finds his suffering fulfilling, in that he's doing his job and reducing suffering for others for every ounce of discomfort and pain he experiences.
And yeah, ironically he looks frail and brittle, but actually can't be killed, so he's actually sort of the ultimate "tank"/"meat shield" :b I'm not sure if anything special would happen if you healed him - the angel might be grateful and perhaps allow you to take some of its essence for later use, or perhaps it might try to convince you not to, because its purpose hinges on having taken on pain, suffering and damage. I sort of thought that because it heals largely through its own blood/tears, if it hasn't experienced any suffering, it wouldn't be able to be useful until it does.

I somehow doubt it - I'm not sure where the team took the original Aethir lore I came up with for them, but I think the angels/Aethir are sort of... special, don't have sentience/free will exactly in the normal sense, I don't think - not sure if a mortal can just become one. But yeah, not sure!
Makes me sort of think of a villain from one of the Suikoden games - as far as you can tell, he's trying to destroy the world, but when you defeat him, it turns out he was actually trying to save the world from being taken over from the force of Order - he foresaw a future with no free will, no passion or emotion, and wanted to prevent it.
Heh, thanks a lot - I know the barrel was sort of a weird choice, but I really wanted to give the feel of a "creature of burden" feel, he needed something on his back, something weighing him down, and I figured maybe it would be a barrel of his own tears/blood, y'know, just to be extra creepy :b
The barrel is absolutely brilliant. You know what would be really gross? If you had to jump into the barrel to talk to it--tell it that you don't want to die or convince it to save someone. And then it keeps turning around so it faces you. That would be a whole lot of goddamnit right there.
The idea of a measure of suffering being pre ordaned in the world and some taking it on to spare others may be a common motif in the midival mindset and in fantasy but this is the first time I've seen a creature designed to address that specifically. Hats off on how you handled it.
