Alarm bell on a 19th century hand-drawn chemical extinguisher fire wagon. The mechanism for ringing the bell was a marvel of simplicity: The axel was fitted with two tabs that engaged the clapper, pulling it away from the bell. As the tab released, a spring pulled the clapper back to strike the bell. So the bell sounded twice with every revolution of the wheel.
Hear the loud alarum bells --
Brazen bells!
What tale of terror, now, their turbulency tells!
In the startled ear of night
How they scream out their affright!
--Edgar Allan Poe, "The Bells"
