If I write it as a story, I have a different thought: She's a powerful unicorn imprisoned (as in "sealed in a bottle" or the like) -- possibly by Discord -- a very long time ago. Probably not an alicorn, but before getting sealed away she was well on her way to becoming one. Now she's having to catch up on centuries of development and change, going almost back to "square one".
