Endless Realms bestiary - Gnoll
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Typically underestimated as nothing but scavengers and raiders, gnolls are keen and intelligent and the ultimate opportunists, making the most of what they can get, and while they're not particularly large compared to the other sentient races, they design their armour and clothing to purposefully make themselves look larger and more fearsome than they really are. In this particular case, we have a warrior who's managed to acquire the skin of an Ulvar Kyr, using it both as weapon and protection.

I would love to run into a pack of these things and have an intimidation battle with the leader of a band of gnolls. Then randomly reach out and rub him behind the ears and see if it'll just roll over xD I think they could make an interesting side story where they kill an NPC that isn't as important anymore but could provide more information further on. The gnoll would wear the NPC's trench coat and have an important document or letter stashed away in it. Another idea is keep one around and make it act like Gollum from Lord of the Rings
Hah, I could see gnolls being clever and wily enough to keep information stashed away, just so they can blackmail or bribe later. And yeah, I wonder if, like dogs/wolves, they'd respond well to someone "alphaing" them - if you can cow the leader, would the group be willing to follow you? Or just leave you alone?
My favorite character I created in D&D is my 11th level Gnoll fighter in 5E. She was raised by a human and an elf (mom was an elf, dad is a human) along with several half-elf "siblings". She's 18, and smitten with a human she saved after his town was attacked by Gnolls. (in the campaign, Gnolls have been raiding towns and villages with increasing regularity) The other Gnolls refer to mine as a traitor, since word has gotten around about a Gnoll not like the others
