A photo of a first attempt at painting parts with the gunmetal after messing with my P-38. The P-38 isn't ready with the paint job yet as it is sloppy work, but I have taken photos of my screw ups to compare when I get the rest in. I basically used a metallic gunmetal automotive paint for this particular experiment. As is, it does look close to the gunmetal one could expect the Dreadnought to be colored as, however it seems to lack a certain depth. It could be that in order to pull it off I would need a medium tint clear coat to pull off the precise coloration, but it's not likely necessary for this bird.
This is the P-61 body components lined with a pair of wings that were only primed.

I was actually using the basic spray can for the paint layer. Down side is that I actually had it angled incorrectly when I went over a couple of the panels. The tail booms were actually too round for it to be wrong, but for flat parts I should have angled them against a support so they could properly drain. To do the panel lining I might start with a 38% paint to 62% thinner. I'll figure out what I want precisely on the Template model first, which is what I got it for.
Ah spray cans are a good way to paint models, but I've seen other modelers use an air brush which are hook to an air compressor.(Now I've never used an air brush on a model before but I have use a spray can before)
And I've hunting around online at USAGundamStore.com, Amazon and Barnes and Noble for a Gundam Marker GM 301(Black) Poor type since it would allow me to panel wash my models without having to deal with mixing the paint and thinner.
