Winter Break Part 1: After Hours
“Is early for snow in this region, da?”
Riou sighed, his breath coming out in a rolling cloud of steam as he walked alongside Boris, out in the park. His sigh had nothing to do with the question Boris just asked. Rather, it was a content sigh. He slowly pressed himself a bit closer to the big Koffing, smiling. “I suppose it’s a bit early for snow…I’ve only spent a year here before.” He said, watching Boris hold out his hand to let snowflakes fall into his open palm, the other hand around Riou’s waist. “What are you doing for Christmas, Boris-sama?”
Boris’ expression darkened for a moment. “Nothing. Cannot afford to go back home to Papa and Mamma, so I am stuck here for the holidays. I may be the only one in the dorm, since everyone else is leaving as well.”
“…You know, you could always spend Christmas with me, Boris-sama. Sakura-chan doesn’t stay in the condo anymore since she started getting out more. She has her own place. And…I’d like it very much if you stayed. It’d give us some uninterrupted time together, which we haven’t gotten very often.” Riou tentatively put forth. Boris stopped walking, and Riou had to dig his heels down to avoid jerking forward at the sudden halt. He looked up, as Boris just stared straight ahead for a moment, then turned and looked down at the Lucario.
“Are you sure? Would not be an imposition on you?” He asked squeezing Riou around the waist a touch.
“Of course it’s not a problem! I wouldn’t have made the invitation in the first place if I thought there was going to be some conflict. Besides, it gives up some quality time to spend together.” Riou said with a smile. “And don’t worry about Sakura. She’s gotten a hotel room…apparently she’s been looking around, possibly getting a job, and she wants to take care of herself.” Riou said. “So we’ve got the condo to ourselves for the week.”
“And…what exactly do you have planned?”
“Nothing out of the ordinary. Tonight the band and I are doing a little playing for me and my friends, last day before Christmas break. I’d like you to come, if it’s not too much trouble.”
“Of course not, Riou. Would love to come.”
“Good, tonight at 7, alright??
“Da.”

“Soooo…spending the break with Boris, are we Riou?” Elizabeth’s melodious voice came from the back of the store. Riou let out a sigh as he palmed his face. Elizabeth was leaning over into a stack of boxes as she rummaged around, her top half obscured by the stacks of crates and assorted items, her hips and tail swaying back and forth. “I see what you’re trying there.”
“Oh stop it! I’m not doing anything!”
“Yes you arrreeeee~ Can’t hide from me, Riou dear. I know what you’re up to. How very clever of you.” She said with a giggle as she stood up straight, holding a box, and she ambled over behind the counter, setting the wooden crate on it. “Using the emptiness of the condo to give yourself alone time without studying with that rather tall, handsome fellow you call your boyfriend, so you can get him out of those stuffy, if sharp clothes and-”
“Not. Another. Word.”
“Oh fine fine!” She giggled as she lifted her hand, pulling the lid from the crate. “But still, I’m sure you want to spend some quality alone time with him.” She went through the stuffing inside of the crate, fishing out a wooden sculpture.
“Of course I do. I mean, yes we’ve gone on dates, and the Hot Springs was nice…but this gives us an extended period where there’s no prior obligations or appointments to get in our way.” Riou said, just staring at the box, elbows on the counter, and his hands on his chin. “Might be one the few chances I get to spend some uninterrupted time.”
“Well, then what are you doing here?”
“…Because you said you wanted to see me?”
“Oh, that’s right. I forget why now.”
“Hehe…daydreaming about him again, are we?”
Elizabeth had to duck in order to avoid the antique couch-pillow that was thrown at her face. And she managed to back it to the backdoor of the store before the second one made contact.

The club was sparsely populated at the moment. Most everyone was spending time with their families, significant others, friends, what have you. So for right now, the students had the floor, outnumbering the normal patrons. Many of them sat in chairs, discussing plans for Christmas, the New Year, during their next semester in school. It was a hubbub of activity. At one table, sat a familiar group consisting of a Luxray, a male Gardevoir, a Magmar, a Poliwrath, a blond-haired Poliwhirl, and a Koffing. They chatted with each other…most of them anyway; the Gardevoir and the Koffing were actually being quiet for the most part.
“So Vince, whatcha gunna get for Eddie, hm?” Charla asked, leaning forward on the table. “C’mon, tell me!”
“You know what they say about curiosity. It killed the cat.” Was Vincent’s reply.
“That might be true, if I were just any cat. But I’m no spring kitten! I’m a lioness! So the rules don’t exactly apply!”
“Really now? So what are you getting Nigel then, hm? Kind of hard to give him his gift with mother over your shoulder, isn’t it?” Vincent countered and Charla’s face bunched up in a scowl.
“Now that’s not fair!”
Tamara hit her brother in the arm lightly. “C’mon you. Lay off the teasing just a bit, you’ve been poking her all night.”
Vincent gave a rather innocent look back to his little sister. “I only poke if provoked.”
“You guys are crazy, you know that?” Meghan chimed in. “Now where’s Vosa? He was supposed to be here over an hour ago!” She crossed her arms over her chest, pouting a little. “And he always goes on about being punctual…I’ll have to give him a piece of my mind.”
“Oy, Riou said he’d be here too, over an hour ago as well? It’s almost 8pm.” Nigel said, speaking for the first time since they’d showed up. “I mean, this club is nice and all, but why would he invite us if he’s not going to show up! Said he had something special.”
“Oh, I’m sure he has a reason. Riou was never late for any of our dates, bar traffic or some catastrophe.” Tamara said with a shrug. “And since he hasn’t called, I’m sure there’s a good reason.” As she finished the lights began to dim, and people looked around confused. There wasn’t any kind of performance planned for the night. “Okay, this is spooky.”
“I doubt you saying it had anything to do with it.” Boris grunted as he looked around as well. On stage, the spotlight came on, and a shapely looking Ninetails strode on stage.
“Hello, all you students out there. Last night before the big vacation, isn’t it? Well, seems someone out there knows what it’s like to want to spend time with your loved ones on Christmas! Because we have a special surprise performance for you! Making their first ever public debut on a professional stage, straight from the halls of Viridian’s own Pokemon Combat Academy. I give you: the Silhouettes!” She called out, stepping aside with a sweeping flourish as the curtain lifted behind her, revealing Riou and the band. A big cheer went up from the crowd, especially from one particular table. Riou went forward to the mic, and coughed experimentally into it, tapping it with a finger.
“Testing testing…ich, ni, san…Okay!” He said, grinning as took the mic. “Sorry about the false pretenses. I didn’t tell you I was here the whole time you were waiting, and that I was playing tonight. But for me, this week is a very special week for me. And I thought, that there’s no better way to kick it off, than to do it with a special song for those of us spending the holidays with those dear to us.” He said, and stepped back Tidot stepped up to the keyboard, and pressed a few keys, beginning a rise sound of pipe organ music, before Vosa started to strum at his guitar. It was about this time that Riou stepped up to the mic, going at his guitar, as Karon started tapping on the drums.
This door is always open,
This door is always open…
No one has the guts to shut us out.
But if…we have to go now, I guess there’s always hope that
Someplace will be serving after hours…
This night is winding down, but time means nothing
As always at this hour, time means nothing
One final, final round, ‘cause time means nothing
Say…that you’ll stay!
Say…that you’ll stay!
We’re fine, but drunk enough that
We’re fine, and soakin’ up the hours that everyone else throws away
And if, we have to go now, there’s always hope
That tomorrow will be more of the same
This night is winding down, but time means nothing
As always at this hour, time means nothing
One final, final round, ‘cause time means nothing
Say…that you’ll stay!
Say…that you’ll stay!
We’re all right where we’re supposed to be
We’re all right where we’re supposed to be
(Time means nothing)
We’re all right where we’re supposed to be
(Time means nothing)
We’re all right where we’re supposed to be
This door is always open,
This door is always open,
No one has the guts to shut us out…
(No one has the guts to shut us out)
Time means nothing…
Time means nothing!
One final, final round ‘cause time means nothing…
Say, that you’ll stay!
Say, that you’ll stay!
Say, that you’ll stay!
The song wound down after that, and the band gave a big bow, to which the crowd gave a resounding, standing ovation. Riou blushed as he did a second bow, along with the band. “Thank you all for coming out tonight! I hope you have a wonderful evening, and an even better Christmas Break!” He said, setting the mic back, and the band went backstage while the crowd continued to cheer. “Whew…that went better than I was expecting.” Riou said as they started to put their gear away.
“Well guys, this is it for us for the Break then.” Tidot said with a grin. “We won’t see each other till school starts again.” He said and held out his hand. This was a tradition for them. They’d done it last year, they would do it again next year. Karon grinned and put her hand out as well, smiling as she laid it over Tidot’s own.
“Yeah, until we get back, let’s keep it together alright. I don’t wanna have to drag myself away from Sal to save your asses.” She said, and Vosa merely rolled his eyes as he extended his hand, resting it atop Karon’s.
“And when we come back, we’ll be better people.” He said simply, and Riou smiled as he put his hand over Vosa’s, to finish.
“To a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.” He said, and all of them nodded, before they all separated, and Karon raised her fist with a whooping shout.
“Now let’s go get the shit kicked out of us by love!!” The rest of them broke into laughter, with Vosa shaking his head. They all shared hugs, and separated, coming out from backstage to mingle with the crowds. They spent the next few hours chatting, drinking, and socializing before the club had to close its doors for the night. As they all separated and went their respective ways, Boris and Riou were left on the corner.
“Did Elizabeth help you get your things to my place, Boris-sama?”
“Da.”
Riou smiled and shook himself a bit as he leaned himself against Boris. “Well, then are you ready to begin Christmas Break?”
“With you? Of course.”
“Is early for snow in this region, da?”
