If you gaze into the abyss...

Today I went to check out this event: http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/.....120-story.html
Which happened to be fairly close to where I live. Here I am with a bunch of other gawkers dumb enough to go climbing over a shattered road on a collapsing hillside. Note that the local 'taggers' have already been there!

Funny thing is, this WASN'T the result of an earthquake. The land along the fault just slipped and this.

Well that is what an earthquake is, the tectonic plates moving and grinding against each other, destabilizing the surface.

But it didn't register as one. It was just slippage of the upper layer. No violent movement or sudden shift of the plates. That was why this was so unusual.

Holy cripe!! For a second, based on the condition and graffiti, I thought it was the road outside my apartment! Thank DOG its only Vasquez Canyon. Very striking none the less. What the heck was everyone on the right of the picture looking down at?

I think they were getting into position to take photos (The woman's holding a camera). The small group of people in the center are watching the skateboarders.

Whoa....this reminds me of that time my family was camping, we turned down this little out-of-the way road....and a ways down it had to stop, because a HUGE portion of it had broken away and slid down the hillside below, leaving a gaping hole in the road.

When you gaze into the abyss...it fucks up your front and rear axles, drive train, wheel alignment, credibility for being able to plot a vacation route, etc
