...maybe it's because the recent pages of Ristlin's comic were a "flashback". Ristlin was telling Optimus Prime about his past. He had gotten to the point where he encountered the (leopard?)'s hunter lodge, which contained these heads.

This side-strip shows that Optimus was not worried about Ristlin dying; that the heads were clearly going to be something else (confirmed last page). Now it's just explaining and showing how Ristlin was scanned (middle panel) and had his head printed (last panel).

Thing is: I don't know. This could be a double bluff (He has a nanoprinter but the heads are actually real) or even a triple bluff (The heads are printed copies but the real heads are still somewhere else).

Well for all we know he also did a brain scan and that artificial head wakes up with all my memories and lives on as a 'decapitated' trophy head.

That's a scary thought.

Maybe even a remote to switch between 'alive mode' and 'trophy head' mode so they are all there hoping someone notices they are 'alive' but can't.

Hard to tell regarding the upgrade kit from what little we see of him here, and my having only minimum knowledge of it, but for me the arms were the give away that he was different.

I was getting the whole 'told in flashback' idea. Ristin is there telling the story with his head on.. and his other limbs removed.
Therefore, PROBABLY he didn't get his head cut off and die right there.
But not 100%. :)

more expensive printers are capable of doing Life like Busts with Clothing... not sure how good they are with fur

It's funny but I have trouble looking good when posing for photos...and that extends to 3D scans to replicate my head.

A 3D printer to make it very lifelike. This figure is clearly an artist of sorts. I'll bet he's really nice in the end, but just gives off a tough attitude in the beginning to get the perfect portrait. :D
