This scene is very appropriate tho - not saying that it happened like this, but something like this did probably happen at some point. Elliott is like 17 here. His mother's name was Agata - she was a uptight, nosy, socialite who would always throw extravagant brunches. She always regretted moving to the US, as she never learned the language properly, and because she thought the culture was a bad influence on her son, whom she always fuzzed especially over. Elliott loved her dearly and never meant for her to die. After his father was assassinated, she took her own life by driving off a cliff while under the influence.
