Right now you are thinking Hey Atariboy why do you Like the first movie more then the others say the second one? Well you have to understand my background on the whole series back in the 70s when Star Trek was off the air for years and the only spin off was the animated series I assume that we would never see any new Start Trek ever but then they said that the theatrical release will happen by late of 79 and we where all hype even back then and seeing my fave TV show on the big screen for the first time was epic. You just had to been there in the theater when all the crowd was screaming and cheering seeing The Enterprise flying by on the big screen^_^ And for that this film will always be my fave Star Trek movie.
I color the backdrop of V-ger with just the airbrush on Gimp and drew both Spock and The Enterprise in vector Inkscape.

I actually re-watched the motion picture relatively recently (This year) for the first time since I was a kid. I remember not liking it as a child, but after re-watching I gotta say I quite enjoyed it. Ive seen every other movie many many many times. But the first one I had only watched when young. Always interesting coming across something that as a child you disliked you can have a new found appreciation for as a adult.
The Motion Picture FELT like an original series episode on the big screen (yeah I know it has the same plot as another episode blah blah) but it just felt epic and massive and just....it was the story that took them where no man has gone before. I'd say in a really weird way...both The Motion Picture and V were the ones closest in tone to the TV series, at least that's how I felt.
Coming back to this piece and reading your story, reminds me more about why this is my favorite Trek movie. I was born in 86 right after the release of IV so not an original fan like you, but I swear I was born one. Much of my life was steered and motivated by Star Trek, to the point of becoming a nuclear engineer on the actual Enterprise.
To see TMP for the first time in the context you saw it in must have been mindblowing, and I can only just taste what it must have been like.
