Drift Wings, like many creatures have gone through many millions of years of evolution, some traits being passed on over others as their species and civilization grew and developed and the genetic pool changed. Of course however, there is the occasional ‘hiccup’ here and there, and while rare, some traits will 'pop up’ every now and then as a 'throwback’. Some are more rare than others.
Clawed hands and feet - While most Drift Wings have normal, round and blunt nails, their ancestors possessed sharper clawed nails, which were ideal for grasping prey mid-flight or used in the occasional midair fights. Sometimes, modern Drift Wings will be born with the genetic predisposition for more claw-like nails.
Jointed wings - An extremely rare, almost un-seen throwback trait that had long been thought to have disappeared from the evolutionary chain. Because they’re used more for soaring and flapping, they can’t keep up with the Drift Wings’ current high-speed wing design. Any modern Drift Wings, should it even occur, born with folded wings are seen as highly anomalous and may even have a hard time flying.
Slitted pupils - Pupils that dilate with the amount of light shined on them. They were useful for ancient Drift Wings that hunted in the dark such as in caves, dense forests and especially at night. It was a long-ago glorious sight to see pre-civilized Drift Wings darting under starlight over fields to snatch up precious prey.
FLUFF - Not nearly as unusual as other throwback traits, extra fluff or fur can occur anywhere on a Drift Wing’s body, from around the chest and neck, to shoulders, arms, legs and so on. They definitely help with keeping warm in colder climates, however they can be a little difficult to work with clothes if the extra fur grows anywhere inconvenient.
MANE - Related to the above-mentioned fluff, but ‘manes’ are actually a little more uncommon among throwbacks. Manes typically can match the color of hair on a Drift Wing’s head but sometimes it’s closer to a different color in their fur and markings.
Some 'Throwback’ Drift Wings exhibit some other primal behaviors, one of them being a strange guttural clicking growl deep in their throat. They usually exhibit this when they are angry, distressed or any other similar occasion.
Other primal vocalizations include chirps, roars, purrs and squeaks. More genetically modern Drift Wings do not possess the same vocal capacity to produce these sounds, as they’ve evolved past the need to.
There is said to be small colonies and communities of throwback and partial throwback drift wings that live 'closer’ to nature, mainly being settled in uncharted places throughout the land. It’s also said that these throwbacks are able to wield strange abilities that is claimed to be gifts from their gods and the 'spirit’ of the planet and nature itself… how much of this is actually true is yet to be seen, though one throwback that’s said to be an authority on this is one Storm Merlo. A near-completely throwback drift wing himself, he’s had many encounters with the occult in his life, and some say he has connections to these mysterious wild throwback clans.
