[ http://fav.me/d9ipps8 on dA for better view of the image? ]
I apologize if anyone who doesnt wanna see this, anyway, moving on for all those who might:
I simply disabled some layers here and put them in the order of which I drew them.
1. sketch/Lineart
Yes my sketches go from really sloppy to cleaned up to like this sometimes in order to keep the "looks good"-ness of the sketch. This can take a lot of time (See my Scraps if you want to see sloppier sketches??) I usually tend to take notice of the Line weight in the end.
2. base colors
In this I literally just color picked from the original art and added some colors, like the red of noiverns nose, to the rest of the characters, same with violet and yellow that you may see on metagross's body.
3. shading
I just filled up the whole base layer with a blue on multipy, then I erased where the light would be
or where I think I would be
oNE NEEDS TO KNOW HOW SHADOWS WORK OK OR ELSE YOUR SHADING WILL LOOK SHIT
I am sorry I am saying it like this but that's how it is. Also don't shade with black unless you know what you are doing.
4. Light
I added some more Light for contrast
5. Overpainting
Look at Metagros's face. I didn't Overpaint a lot in this picture, but I usually do in pictures where my sketch layer is messier.
6. Color balancing??
Yeah basically final touch ups, added some more red to metagross because this is like blues clues.
Also yeah, this guy here http://fav.me/d53qvmq
has an actual progress tutorial thing where he shades and overpaints which shows it way better than me, but that's also how I shade sometimes.
Feel free to ask questions~

ooohhh you're so nice OwO thanks for uploading this. you know? O: i watch the process and i already feel lost in the third layer. i suppose it's because i'm really bad at coloring that i find it so difficult to mix the colors and use other colors to shade/light (like that time with the clowns? i was crying trying to follow your instruccions and tutorials properly xwx but at the end i really liked the result).
i suppose i can only keep practising but this and the tutorials you showed me gave me some enlightenment c: thank you very much~

haha, I just like to help, LB~
yeah I remember the clowns. The difference might be the art style in general. Even though I draw Pokemon or other things, I like to keep it realistic-ish and painterly, while you stay with a cute Cell shading style that I am not capable of.
Well... step 1, 2 and 3 are most of the work after all...
I know that you know how to make outlines, so I guess step 1 is somewhat clear, even if I work differently than... well most artists.
Step 2 is coloring in. I usually start with complete basics, just filling in the correct base colors. then... well, actually, for metagross I had 2 references that had different colors. I added both to this metagross. I guess you can try that... get official references or something and colorpick the colors. (They need to look somewhat similar though) Then blend them in together so that they are both the base colors. (Of course, I then did more, but what I just said is how I started learning how to do it)
step 3... I realize it''s quite a step, so... here is another tutorial!

For this drawing I used this so called... well this tutorial calls it "Erase-Away Painterly Shading". I filled everything with a layer of shade and then erased away.
However my shading method varies from picture to picture. The most important thing is that you know how shadows work and how they work in your picture, on your characters and their surroundings.

oooh yes, i've seen that erasing method but i can't work with it xD i leave a big mess in my drawing. i don't always use cell shading, i just use it because it's easier than the shading with brushes and mixing colors, but i really wish i could do it that way too :'c
i also use the references for the colors, that's something everybody should do .-.
still, thanks for the explanations and tutorials. i'll practice with those now ;A;

Ahh everything can work with something else. With a bit of practice and observation you'll manage it~
wELLLLL I didn't always, and you don't always use the official arts color because the environment may affect that color and etc.
You gotta think outside the box sometimes
ahh good luck man I know you can do it
