I KNOW THIS IS OUTDATED AND STUFF, IT WAS BEFORE I KNEW ABOUT THE GENOCIDE RUN, BUT ENJOY THE CONCEPT ANYWAYS! ♥
So I don't like to think that when a monster dies, their soul dies too... Because that just sounds too depressing. I like to think of two things:
1) Their soul becomes a star.
2) If they're near a stronger soul, their soul can survive by sort of "borrowing" power from that stronger soul.
In this picture's case, it's the latter. Since Chara and Asriel were together at death, I imagine Chara has been carrying around Asriel's soul this whole time, and wanted to return it to him.
