When animals considered to be "prey" by the apex predators of the world begin to band together for safety, where does it leave those caught in between?
Namely, a pair of pine martens, carnivores and flesh-eaters themselves, but small enough to be considered food for the bears, wolves and gluttons of the forest and field. They're on a journey to seek sanctuary with the rabbits, squirrels and other prey that have gathered to Oren--but they don't know if welcome or condemnation will meet them.

You kidding? The wolves will all just end up dead somehow like always. Wolves never make it out alive in fiction.
(Whenever I see a wolf in a fuzzy comic, I get briefly excited and then immediately sigh because I remember that he'll be dead soon. I don't believe I've ever encountered an exception to this in furry fiction. X3 )

Being a wolf isn't all sunshine rainbows and happiness. Sometimes, to get food on the table, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. It would be nice if the martins saved the day, but realistically, what can they do against apex predators? Not saying the big guy is completely defenseless, now. He may go down, but he could take a few wolves with him. A good kick, a solid punch, and we're looking at broken bones or worse.
It's the bison's own damn fault anyway: he ran. David Mech's classic study of wolf/moose predation on Isle Royale showed that the moose who stood their ground against wolves always survived, while the ones who ran occasionally died.
Speaking as a wolfy thing myself, he should thank the wolves for the privilege of being killed and eaten by them. That's what you get when you're the weakest link.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... ... oooooooooooooooooooooooooo... ... ooooooooooooooooo!
I mean... Why eat the bison when you can marry it and get lot's of food when becoming famous by being the first (?) "official" "classical" predator+prey couple in the whole forest?
That, or maybe the wolf shouldn't get too close unless he wants that bison's friends jumping on him suddenly. I mean... If the "prey" are starting to band together, that wouldn't be totally unexpected, i guess...
