Those who believe that Alchemy is of pure Earthly, mineral and metallic nature ought to abstain from it.
Those who believe that Alchemy is of pure spiritual nature ought to abstain from it.
Those who believe that Alchemy is merely a symbol, employed because of the similarity between them to reveal the course of “the spiritual fulfilment”, in other words that Man is the Matter and athanor, ought to give it up.

This is a quote from some pseudo-philosophical French scientist back in the early 1800's. Basically, it illustrates the paradoxical nature of alchemy as a whole, both in historical terms and (what were then) modern terms. It also vaguely refers to the fact that very few (if any) practitioners completely 'master' the art (if that is all possible), and most people spend most of their lives trying to understand it (in an art with no universally defined constants and a lack of translated texts). I found a wonderful article which does an excellent job at overviewing alchemy (serious alchemy, that is) here: http://hem.fyristorg.com/lbl/index1.htm . It's also where I got the picture from.
