This is Tabatha, Desmond's mother. I had hoped to introduce her before now in another story where Desmond gets his Nether Dragon Giada, but it ended up being a bit longer than I was expecting.

I love Tabatha, she's so fun to write dialogue for. Been hard not to post anything with her for over a year (that's when I wrote the draft for Size Matters 2).
The short version is they are spirits bound to a living creature, this bond allows them to have a physical body. There are wild Nether Dragon's too, which are bound to a holy tree (the one that Tabatha mentions is a holy tree sapling, as Chani is a Druid).
