Lets be honest here...
I reject evil tribal bullshit laws as easily as I reject a evil tribal God.
I remember as a kid I decided to read the bible. It seemed to be the thing to do since I was a Catholic. I was not 3 min into before i came across the story of some father banging his daughters so he could have a son....
I was sure I read it wrong I read it over a few more times and then decided to just stick to watching "Jesus of Nazareth staring Robert Powell.
As for the Koran..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIUnQ7mv0Y0 So yes there is fucked up shit in there too.
And here is some food for thought... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvBSnjgvVKo

There's some discussion as to rather or not nephilim really originates out of Christianity...Apparently it finds some of it's roots in Nordic traditions.. Similar to how Christmas is the christianization of Celtic and Germanic solstice celebrations... Yule specifically.
But yes I am familiar with the myth... Part of the myth as I recall is that they were part of the reason for the flood.

I don't know if that joke is known in english speaking countries (my translation):
The Pope dies and goes to heaven. Petrus greets him and asks him what his name is.
"I'm the Pope."
"Pope, Pope," mmurmured Petrus. "I'm sorry, but there is no one with that name in my book."
"But I am God's representative on earth."
"God has a representative on earth?" asked Petrus dumbfounded. "Strange, he did not tell me anything about that."
The Pope's face turns red. "I am the head of the catholic church."
"Catholic church? Never heard of it," replies Petrus. "Wait a moment, I ask the boss."
He goes into heaven ad tells God:
"There is one who says he is your representative on earth. He is called Pope. Does that tell you anything?"
Nope," says God. "I don't know him. I know nothing about that. Just wait, I ask Jesus. "Jeesus!"
Juses runs to them. "Yes father, what's up?"
God and Petrus explain the situation to him.
"A momen," says Jesus. "I take a look at him. Be right back."
Ten minutes later he returns laughing tears.
"I don't believe it," pants Jesus. "Do you remember that small fishing club, that I founded 2000 years ago? It's still around!"

this is why i profess wiccan, and this blasphemy the goddess does not like.
i believe in a spiritual force that appears to each in a form that they can understand and relate too
but what i don't understand is why a god with the same roots tells the christians to kill mausoleums and vice versa, allah and god are the same person just different names and beliefs all stemming from abraham wife sarah and the concubine hagar

What really gets me is how much of it is obviously made up. Lets say for arguments sake that the majority of the historical stuff in either book actually happened, there was a Moses, a Jesus, a Mohammed and so on. Okay, Mohammed WAS real, thats a historical fact, but you get my point. What on EARTH makes people think that they were telling the truth? Moses and Mohammed both claimed to speak to God on a mountain with no other witnesses around, and both mysteriously had divine orders at a time when their respective groups needed some form of leadership to rally around. Jesus didnt even have that, he just walked around telling people he was the son of God, also magically at a time when the poor and downtrodden needed someone to rally around. Hell, he wasnt even the first guy to claim to be the messiah, the Romans just didnt catch him before his message took root.
While not too related, there was quite a funny video (Animation on a podcast opening up on a NeoGaf topic) which did go into some of the "Bible Protagonists", guessing it all comes down to interpretation.

I do heavily agree with your message though, that the decency of both of those books (And I would also extend to any form of writing, not just on religious basis) do rely on the better nature of the reader; while not at all a religious person, can still understand the moral direction and teachings that they may want to put towards their reader, though interpretation and social changes have of course lead to more negative viewpoints and conflicts as a result.

unicorns eh, in the Quran in Sura Al-Isra telling about the prophet riding a Buraq(steed) during the night journey, although if you search what it is, they always portray it having a humanoid head but there was none mentioning of it's actual depiction of the head...
but its similar relating to a Pegasus

"There is no good or evil in this world. But us believing it, and making it, makes them both real"
The acts of one group or another do not make an entire race or ethnic group evil. I'm always shocked at how people will point the finger at others and call them all evil or bad, even here on FA. So it makes me happy to see someone pretty much speaking logic, that evil comes from ourselves.
I personally feel the worst parts of any holy book were put in there by man to justify their own hatred of others. I'm so happy to find a post that for once is not saying "all Muslims are evil" or "all religious people are evil so we should kill them all". Its like finding water in a desert.

I find it has more to do with general education than any particular religion. You'll find plenty of screeching monsters who are still christians, just as you'll find plenty of muslims like that in any area with high poverty and lack of education. Higher quality of life generally leads to a more progressive mindset. Of course, thats not the only cause, but no issue usually has one single cause
I do agree, it's a good foundation for at least being a good person- because he didn't discriminate. Hell, his apostles were mostly people others wouldn't associate with.
What is really disturbing is that people take a lot of the bible out of context, in which I can see you don't, because it's pretty obvious that a lot of the things written in there are quite dated.
That and the flying spaghetti monster comment was just for shits and giggles. That was one thing my friends joked about considering the ridiculous book's idea of a stripper factory and a beer volcano being part of it.

Well, your interpretation does, presumably.
Quite a bit of the New Testament is all about reinforcing the old law, "not one jot or tittle" if you want the soundbyte quotable quote.
Also a lot of the New Testament is just wandering around explaining that Jesus fits in the Old testament stuff. Apparently Joseph is descended from King David through the magic of handwavium, so Jesus is King even though he bears no blood relation to much of anything nor really needing it except to people trying to convert Jews to Jesusism.
And speaking of tribal dogma, you're still kinda right that TRIBAL dogma is abandoned, but the DOGMA is still there. Anybody who doesn't convert to Christianity is pretty clearly damned to hell even in the NT, the big earth-shaking change for that religious family is that suddenly people were ALLOWED to convert and join the tribe.
But as I said, it's interpretation. Are you an asshole coming with a sword (Crazy Mattie 10:34) or are you turning the other cheek?

You're confusing Old and New Testament.
Old Testament with all the slavery, incest and other crazy stuff was the Jews.
New Testament, which pretty much boils down to 'do unto others' along with the forgiving and nice God is what Christians use.
Now the Koran on the other hand, it's a military manual - there's no love or forgiveness or tolerance included in it - it is the religion of submission and there are numerous chapters devoted to explaining how the spoils of war are divided, whether to rape or marry a woman you capture in war and even going so far as to note that it's ok to have sex with your camel but if you later butcher the camel you screwed that you can only sell the meat of that camel to your neighbor and not in the general market.
As such, comparing the three religions, you've got Judaism, with the tribal stuff, Islam, with the murder/enslave all non-Muslims and Christianity, with the Golden Rule.
As for unicorns, most experts agree that the unicorn, which was originally described as having skin impervious to arrows, a single horn and a very foul disposition that makes it prone to charge anything in sight, was actually a rhino and that the horse version came much later.

No, two entire different books and teachings.
The NT is the teachings of Jesus and one of the first things he said was to scrap the OT as he was starting fresh with the whole "golden rule" and "turn the other cheek" routine along with a loving and forgiving God who was giving up the old fire and brimstone routine.

Actually, the "uppity" thing that they really focused on in the Lilith story was that she demanded to ride Adam Cowgirl instead of lying down and taking it. Though that rapidly turned into "demonic succubus hell-beast."
Sadly, I've been finding out a lot about just how terrible the New Testament really is lately. Turns out a LOT of the "Buddy Christ" moments in the bible are fairly recent rebrandings of stories/interpretations that were a lot more violent and horrible a few centuries ago. And of course, even the nice versions never got rid of Matthew. Jesus said some pretty bad stuff. Of course that stuff has been downplayed these days, which is nice, but it's still THERE waiting for some asshole to use it.
But so it goes...
Honestly though, the religion is a pretty small factor. The largest factor behind ISIS and Syria's upset is global climate change. Massive multi-year drought drove people to desperation and into concentrated cities that weren't built to handle the sudden influx. Desperation and violence led to breakdown of the already-shaky social order. Civil war started and the group that grew the fastest was the one that was most poised to take in truly desperate people.
As far as ISIS is concerned, the world is coming to an end. In many ways it is. So they're trying to set up the apocalypse so it will go down correctly.
I mean, think about it. For the past 10 generations you've never left the same 20-mile area and only dealt with the outside world when guns and bombs were coming in to kill your people. Suddenly that entire area is true desert and you've been displaced to another part of the world that is also slowly dying. It seems like everywhere you run things are getting worse and every person you meet is another desperate refugee from some place you never even heard of fleeing war, famine, pestilence and death. Add in that you're kind of bum-fark ignorant and have difficulty imagining how big the world really is. Wouldn't you think the entire world was about to end? Wouldn't that have an effect on your priorities and attitudes?

It's not like we don't know. Hell, Cracked.com has once of the best analyses of Daesh (or whatever we think is "best" to call this little death cult) by just sitting down and reading their propaganda and deconstructing it.

I will follow the word of my creator and father the One True God of whom there is not the slightest bit of evil. No matter what people think the Bible is the only truth I can count on so go ahead and mock all you want I will take what makes people stronger, I'll take the truth I'll take the Bible.
The Bible consists of two parts. Jesus was the second part. He was killed because people wanted to follow the first part. Hardly a perfect book. Certainly not a book that grants perfection on anyone.
I do believe in the teachings of Jesus whether I am going to heaven, hell or oblivion when I die. However I will tell you a truth. Jesus died surrounded by people who believed themselves to be the master of truth. No one is the master of truth not even God. God must obey the truth because if he didn't he would be evil just like anyone else would be.
Religion has been perverted by belief to the point that people believe themselves to be righteous even when the results are horrifying. If you believe God is the source of wisdom and justice then anyone seeking these qualities must be seeking God.
Does anyone ever worry about committing evil in the name of God? Because looking at history I certainly would be.
