Invest in some masking fluid if you haven't already, it will make keeping white areas white and making sharper lines where you need contrast.
Also, I don't use black either, just paynes grey myself. Just try to determine a light source and play off that to build your forms as right now it's hard to tell where your shadows and stuff are.
