To go on record, this does not imply that anything improper happened.
This is the beginning of the story about Kiki and "Darl." It isn't the night that he found her lost in the street, but a little while after, when the had fallen into the habit of watching late-night TV and eating popcorn in "Darl's small, shabby flat. But as you see, Destiny is already At Work.
Naturally, I felt compelled to sketch out the entire apartment, to set the atmosphere for this specific drawing. Think small, basic, old, some personal clutter, not a lot of light, cheap rent, a pizza box in the kitchen but otherwise fairly tidy.

More than 4 hours proximity to a kanada will start the metamorphosis or metastasis into one.
Probably the same thing happens here. He & she slept in the same bed.
In THE SHADOW OVER INNSMOUTH, the narrators uncle shot & killed himself, spurning immortality as a cannibal monster. If the guy here shot himself to spurn life as a fraggle (and I need to be 6' tall and I have a job in the city.), that would be a victory of sorts over the trash heap.
