It had a type 1 bayonet on it that didn't work very well, so I figured it'd be a good candidate to sporterize in a tasteful matter, as opposed to breaking loose the bayonet screw and dropping it in an ATI stock. This is more of an in-progress picture that Phaux asked for, still has some ways to go before it's done.
I raped my nagant with a ATI stock and this cheap ass scope mount that required removing the rear sight. that was my biggest mistake right there....
I'm thinking about using that rifle for a project of mine, building a custom rifle outta a war legend. reload my own ammo made up of 30-30 shells :\

Would the .30-30 be long enough for that, and the rim too small? Or were you going to rebarrel it and modify the bolt face? There is cheap 7.62x54r available in reloadable cases, it'd probably be easiest to get some of those and reload them. I know S&B and PPU both make fairly good stuff, and I think Remington makes good ammunition for them, as well.
Either way, it'll be interesting to see what becomes of that. Unusual rifle projects are always nice to see.

all the ammo I ever seen for the nagant was either steel or old corrosive ammo from WW2, didn't think there was any good brass out there.
If I do this re barreling ( I work part time for a gun smith and wanna learn to make barrels any ways) I'd rechamber it so I can use custom rounds, I was thinking 30-30 cause of its size of 7.62x51 R. if I should be able to use a .270 caliber die to change it to something un heard of.
The First worry before I do this is to find a decent and usable scope mount that would fit a modern 30mm tubed scope.

They do have bases that go over the rear sight, and there's a reproduction 1" PE scope mount available. Either should be good with a nice shotgun scope of the proper eye relief.
The .30-30 has a smaller rim, and you'd have to modify the extractor and bolt face in order to feed it.
Oddly enough, though, I've noticed that the bolt face can be opened up very slightly, or lightly modified brass used, to rebarrel to .45-70. Though it'd be a strictly single-shot rifle at that point, unless you were willing to make some major modifications to the receiver and magazine.

You could also load it pretty hot. I'd say the Mosin action could take anything a Marlin lever action could, it's locked with a pretty good bolt face, instead of a little block blocking half the bolt. You could probably load safely almost to 3000 ft/lbs without going over pressure.
Definitely a trade for the better, then! This Mosin cost about $80, a Russian SVD Dragunov will set you back about $3,000. Even the inferior Hungarian clone sells for $800. Surplus 7.62x54R is cheap, anyways, but it's harder to get the SVD clean enough. The Mosin you just gotta clean out the barrel really well.
