Canvi (New Species) Reference Sheet
Species Name: Canvi
About Them: Canvi are highly creative canines that use their bodies as literal canvases for themselves and others.
Personalities: Personalities vary for each individual. In general, they are loyal creatures and take good care of their packs/family/mates/friends/etc. Canvi are often extremely creative (though there are those few that may not be quite as artistic as others) and pride themselves in their markings. Though most canvi are pretty well behaved, it's not rare to run into some of the pranksters that enjoy surprise marking other canvi in their sleep.
Size: They are about the size of a large dog- such as a pyrenese- and generally have long thin bodies. This can vary from canvi to canvi though, depending on how well they are fed.
Hands: The "hands" they have are similar to retractable claws. They come and go as the canvi please. All are transparent (but can be different solid colors- no markings or changing these). These hands are used to paint themselves and others. In desparate times, they may be used as weapons but enough struggling would allow another creature to squirm right through them.
Glands: These glands are large pockets of colored fluids (referred to as paint) that stretch across the canvi, directly under their spine. They have spout like openings on top of the back that will "erupt" either on command or when the glands become too full (these are "fueled" by their food- meaning a glutton will often have an issue with controlling his gland eruption while a light eater may never experience an accidental paint spray). The smaller glands are located inside their shoulders on either side and act as reserves.
Paint: The "paint" as it is called is used for multiple purposes.
Identity. No two canvi have the same exact gland colors in the same exact placing. And since each canvi also has a different level and/or style of painting skill, no two canvi have the same markings.
Distraction. What's more confusing than trying to attack a creature and then suddenly finding yourself any color of the rainbow?
Ownership. If a canvi wishes to claim an object, mate, or area, they will mark it with three lines of their paints in order as they appear from head to rear.
Beauty. This fits hand in hand with identity. Canvi will paint themselves or allow others to paint them to give the appearance of unique markings. These markings can be covered or added on to, but the paint will not wash off. If a canvi wishes to start over, it must first find another with a white paint gland.
Reproduction and Families: Canvi mate like normal mammals and generally have litters of 3-6 pups. Pups will have paints consisting of their parents colors or mixes, either like a lava lamp (ex: yellow and blue swirling together) or as a changed color (ex: yellow + blue = green). Mates are often chosen for what the parents believe would make the prettiest pup. Terms of beauty varies amongst them (ex: one canvi might wish to only have bright colors in the family line while another may enjoy having lighter, duller colors)
REMEMBER: All pups are born solid WHITE (except for their paint glands of course) until they are given their markings by their parents, friends, or an "artist" canvi. While young, canvi usually have markings similar to their parents (because mommy and daddy know best) but will later grow into their own individuality and may desire changes.
Canvi stick with their packs- but pack size varies greatly. Some may prefer to have only their mate, and pups if they have any, while some may prefer to have their entire family line in one place. Loners are rare but not unheard of.
(for the sake of people who own any of these and only want one or like species variaty, yes canvi CAN mate with other creatures but they cannot create pups with a different species)
Coloration: Canvi are solid white, naturally. The markings they are given by themselves or others are only limited by the colors they can find and the skills they or others have.
Accessories: They don't generally wear any accessories unless it is something they find and feel would go nicely with their "marking theme" such as sea shells for a sea theme or leaves for a nature theme. If they are embarrassed by a messed up paint job, they may try to find and/or steal clothing to cover it up.
Diet: Like canines, they often prefer meat or meat products. In some cases however they may also eat other things such as fruits and veggies.
Habitat: Mild climates where their paint will not freeze or overheat. If the weather is too cold or too hot, they will find somewhere- anywhere- to hide.
Domestication: Though it IS possible for a human to domesticate a canvi, their creative urges are almost sure to leave your house a colorful mess. They also long to be around others of their species as well as have the chance to recieve their unique markings. Unless you plan to have a pack of paint spraying canines or have time to sit around and paint and repaint your canvi as often as they like, it is best to leave them be in most cases.
Status: As of right now it is a SEMI CLOSED SPECIES. You MUST obtain one from either myself or HoneyDipply. Once you have your own canvi, you may breed it (with permission) to someone else's canvi. Or if you have multiples you may breed them yourself. HOWEVER all pups must be approved after creation and before it is considered official (unless you use an illegal trait then I highly doubt you'd be turned down, we just want to know how many and where these canvi are). We will add your name and your canvi's name(s) to an official owner's list. Unless your name is on there then you are not allowed to create canvi. You may not create your own canvi that has nothing to do with a breeding. Before purchasing a canvi from someone besides myself or HoneyDipply please check with us or the owner's list. It is up to you to alert us if ownership has changed. Due to issues with theft and the inability to trust every person on dA, anyone claiming to own a canvi or have the ability to sell them that is not listed will be given a warning. Further action will be taken if this warning is ignored. Wow I feel like a lawyer.
Illegal Features:
More than three glands
Perfect gradient paints (they may "blend" but should also swirl around like real paint unless completely mixed)
Mutations such as wings, horns, extra eyes or limbs, etc (large claws/fangs/other such is fine though, as well as missing parts if they have a story behind it)
If anything isn't covered or you aren't sure about it just ask!
