Really, if cloth is armor the why isn't my t-shirt protecting me when I fight those dire-hamsters?

No, see, that's a separate magic item "Evards Black Panties of Tickling Tentacles" created by the arch-mage for a particularly cute apprentice.
I hear Bigby created a similar item "Bigbys Cupping Hands", a more intimate and personal (and permanent) form of his famous "hand" spells.

I was going to say! Though in a magical setting it could make sense for magic-users to wear armor padding alone, without metal over the top, to prevent a mesh of electrically conductive material from interfering with the ley lines. >_> It'd provide some measure of protection without hampering magic use. It wouldn't do much against, say, your average knife, but when getting hit with a club it could mean the difference between a bruised chest and cracked ribs.

Well you see armor interferes with the wizards' spell casting due to the fact that a wizard needs to feel the magical winds penetrating through his clothes so that he can cast the spell.......that and the fact that metal armor is heavy and the majority of wizards are completely weaklings.

No the Force is an energy field based on the emotions of the person able to wield it, an example would be the Jedi. Magic on the other hand is based from the spirit or element such as fire, wind and water.
the difference between the force and magic is that magic usually takes a form of something such as fireballs, gusts of wind and ice shards, whilst the force is able to levitate, choke, telepathically control etc without the need of a form.
Well at least that how i see it.
So to answer your question: I have no clue. Have you ever seen a wizard fight a Jedi before?

Aside from the protection that heavy cloth does offer vs piercing and slashing, silk also makes a good undergarment for chain and plate mail, because, if woven correctly, it is both slick and strong, and will protect the skin if the mail is dented or broken.
However, history lesson aside... hehehehe.

Exactly. Silk is stronger than most people realize, and if woven thickly, it stands up to a lot of damage. When an arrowhead, or broken rings of chain mail, pierce the skin, the silk 1) makes it easier to remove, and 2) protects the wearer from the worst of the dirt and grunge on the metal.
Fiber geek silk.

Actual cloth armor is made from heavy canvis with cotton batting in between, sort of like a quilt made by a grandmother suffering from testosterone poisoning. It actually is more flexable than hardened leather and offer about the same protection from blunt objects, hardened leather does resist edged weapons better. Cloth armor with some stratigically placed metal plates inside the layers offers the best protection for rouges who need quiet.
Why do I know this?

the bit behind cloth armor is supposed to be like wearing LAYERS of it. Robe over robe over robe. Believe me a punch hurts less between three layers of thick cloth... either that or magic user are supposed to imbue their duds with magic enchantments that improves it toughness from two-ply to like six... wow i am a nerd...
Yeah, double edged sword as well. The 'distraction' skill it comes with is great against male enemies. But ineffective against the dreaded Gay Elf, though he might just comment on how much prettier his armor is compared to mine.
