Endless Realms bestiary - Corrupt Treasure Spirit
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
While normally I get a mix of different kinds of creatures, this monster block consisted of entirely corrupted spirits. The world(s) of Endless Realms has a number of gods, but they are normally quite removed - spirits, on the other hand, thrive in the Corporeal Realms of mortal races, often creating symbiotic relationships with its people, places, and principles, inhabiting places such as villages, forests or rivers, or representing concepts such as harvest or war. However, sometimes these spirits grow hungry for power and become corrupted, twisted versions that feed off the world rather than nourish and balance it - for these various concepts, I've tried to capture the darker, nastier essence of what they represent. The art director required all the spirits to be humanoid, but requested that they all be "eerie and strange" - I took that quite liberally. There's a lot that can be done with the basic humanoid shape, and alternatively making them all "people with different horns and bits on them, or wearing different outfits" seemed terribly boring.
On the list of suggested spirits I could choose from, the art director included a spirit of gems - corrupted ones would sap the beauty from crystals instead of cultivate them. I thought this might work well as a slightly more general "treasure" spirit. Perhaps normally they are benevolent, merry fellows more than happy to bestow gifts to those who prove they are worthy, but have instead turned to cannibalizing their own treasures, and as they grow in power, blackmailing the riches from others - don't have the opulent wealth or treasures to placate the spirit? He'll settle for your soul.

Heh, yeah :V In fact, he actually made me think a lot of a snowman, up until I painted him gold :b But yeah, I imagined maybe the normal spirit had gems or crystals for an eye (or maybe they originally had two), but they become more twisted and grotesque as they become corrupted, with the gem jutting from his face as his avarice grows :V
... y'know, or something :V

This is an interesting creature. I could see this thing in a treasure filled with mimics and you have to sneak around all the treasure without making noises or this corrupt Treasure Spirit will attack you for being to close to his precious. And then if you get the urge to open a treasure chest you have the DM role to see if it's a mimic or not which will also set of the encounter. Random question, how good is its eye sight?
*chuckles* Yeah, this thing definitely made me think of mimics as a closely related monster :b Also aurumvoraxes and rust monsters, for what are probably fairly obvious reasons :b I actually have no idea what any of its stats will be like, to be honest, or how "senses" are dealt with by ER's game mechanics, so I can't really answer that one. Sorry!
