So this isn't a blow-by-blow video of me painting as much as it's just me running through the layers in the finished file, but I made a point of leaving in a lot of the in-progress layers I'd normally have thrown out/collapsed down. Hopefully it's interesting, if not terribly educational ^_^ I'll be moving it to scraps after a day or two.
If nothing else, you can see my lame initial sketches in a boring side view before going for a more interesting perspective, and watch my epic battle against that freaking eye, trying to get it to look half-decent >_<
This comes as a product of me experimenting with screencasting tools here to see if I can get a working solution that won't bog down Photoshop on my already wimpy laptop too much ^_^ If anyone out there is a wiz with this stuff, advice is always welcome!

wtf how the heck do you ink so cleanly on photoshop @ flowers 3/4 of the way through D:<
also yes lol @ the constant fiddling of eyes throughout :( I do that with hands and joints
imo if you do more of these in the future you should put a little number on the bottom that shows which slide out of total # you're on :3 BUT THAT'S NITPICKING

With the pen tool <3 (CHEATING)
And I totally agree that a frame count would be nice with something like this, but it's not actually a sequence of still frames -- it's a flash conversion of an avi of me toggling through my layers in realtime. There are like 60 layers in the file, but way more frames in this video. I could always just add something on each frame that has the frame number on the corner, but some layers are transparent, or set to different blending modes... Kind of a pain >_<
The screencasting program I'm using also supports audio, though, which is nice. I could be like, "HURRRR so in this layer, I added sparkly colors to the big gay flowers," and commentate along the way.

Just the regular, plain ol' pen tool ^_^ I find the freeform pen tool usually leaves me with a bunch of weird anchor points I don't really want. After you get used to it, the regular pen tool is just as fast and easy, and it makes for a cleaner, more considered line in the end.
And yeah, there's so much in Photoshop >_< Hehe, you'd pick it all back up in a minute, I'm sure, but it's definitely a lot to keep in your head if you haven't used it in a while.

Sure, although I find that doing all my linework with the pen tool usually makes for pretty lifeless lines. Illustrator has some more interesting vector inking features, but when I'm working in Photoshop, I tend to freehand most of my lines, just to keep them lively. Then again, that's probably why doing linework-intensive stuff like that tooth-brushing doxie is so painful, haha >_<
Haha, yeah, there's a section in the middle where I have all these dinky little adjustments, and it basically looks like it's paused for 20 seconds 9_9... At least people have already seen the final image, so they know where it's supposed to wind up ^_^
Next up, I guess I should try doing this with footage of me actually painting. We'll see how it goes ^_^

You should totally distribute your next novel as a flash document that just spews out a massive string of syllables in rapid succession.
But yeah, I know what you mean. The visual arts usually don't have this performative element to them, either, and us painter types are the ones to sit there being jealous of people who sing or play an instrument because (and I say this at the risk of driving folks away from my panel, haha) it's generally not the most interesting thing to sit there and watch someone draw for hours on end.
...I'd probably find it interesting, but then, there's no accounting for taste, is there?

I'm seeing strange, irregular, rectangular outlines around the changes you are working on. Is that something you are doing in PS, or is that just my browser interpreting the video compression oddly. If it's the latter it's actually quite interesting. It gives insight into how delta-compression (I just made that up) works. It's actually quite helpful as it draws the eye to what you are working on at a given moment. Cool video.
Hmm, I was noticing something like that before when I was experimenting with compression and other settings, but this file views fine for me. It's possible that a different browser affects playback, or maybe there's some codec involved (although as a flash file, that shouldn't really be an issue?). Curious...
Usually not black and white, but I'll paint in the rough silhouette of what I'm doing in some random color that stands out against the neutral background color I've laid down on the canvas. In this one, I knew I wanted the fire to stand out, so I figured I'd make a dark background. That wound up changing later on, but that at least explains why I was painting in light blue against a dark purple background at the beginning. Once I have that silhouette/basic form, I paint over that in whatever colors I want to use <3
And yup, I'm 100% Photoshop here. It's all you ever need! </huge bias>

Sorry if this was already answered. Buuut
What are all those lines floating about? I'm not quite sure as to what the purpose of those are. I think it has .. something to do wth perspective maybe? but. Yeah I'm not the best at that, by any means.. meh? o_O
Awesome final piece.
