Commission done for
ravegeam, thank you very much!
This one came awfully close to having similar problems to the commission i've done for
TKR a while ago( https://www.furaffinity.net/view/17736122/ ), or well, the version that forced me into redoing the picture into what it is now.
My values just were a mess , people who know destiny know that the traveler is a big white ball hovering above a city, and the problem was that the clothing were white as well, and we've got the city lights in the background. So do i go with a lighter ball to highlight the shape of the ball or not? How much emphasis on the city lights before the just melt all the light values together? And for a good while it was a mess, thankfully all that panicking can be neatly hidden in notes when you've got a good amount of time to think about it . :P Ultimately i'm pretty happy with the outcome though! So all's well that ends well!

Nice job! I see your dilemma and, no, it's not an easy choice. One way would be to use a different color for the foreground lighting-- perhaps a red or yellow color such as some artificial lighting produces. This would produce a light pink or yellow color in the strongly lit areas of clothing, a blue cast in the shadowed areas, and the background lighting would be set apart. I'm not sure if the lights in the distance are like city spotlights on the sphere or if they are emanating from the sphere or if they might represent a glow in the horizon. I believe that what makes that a difficult thing to discern is that there's no darkness beyond the lights (e.g., spotlights should cast shafts of light-- more if it's humid, less if it's clear or stormy. All that is said with helpful intentions. I'm not sure that I could've painted it so well myself! :>
The background is more or less a replica of how it looks ingame, with a fairly bright glow surrounding the city right underneath, so that's something i wanted to keep the way it is. And for the artificial light, yes that was one of the directions i tried to go, but there never were many foreground elements planned , and with a more orange-ish artificial light the whole outfit just looked a little too orange since there weren't elements around to have it relate to. I'm sure the artificial light could work out splendidly, but it just didn't in my case so i went with the more neutral one :) And absolutely no offense taken or anything of the sort, i think it's always great to hear other perspectives and suggestions like that!
I just started working through a cool book "Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter" by James Gurney. Windfalcon had journaled about it a while back and so I decided to get myself a copy. It's great so far-- a more useful introduction to color theory and how different styles have integrated it. It could be useful for you too.
Awesome work. :) I can appreciate what you're saying about how difficult the contrast and balance must have been to sort out, but the result really came out fantastic. The way you kept the Traveller that dark, just lit by the city below, looks really great. All in all it's got a really great mood to it.
