An idea for a series of short stories I'd like to write, with a short sample. Essentially, this revolves around an alternate world where Homonids have always possessed Magic, Neanderthals never went extinct (explaining the presence of Dwarves), and all forms of Magic release particularly energetic radiation which results in higher background radiation levels, and a much higher rate of mutation, and therefore higher rate of evolution within species (explaining the presence of Anthropomorphs.) Magic has largely been repurposed itself as a form of technology, used in surprisingly mundane tasks, which prevented or delayed some of our own innovations, such as the Oxyacetylene torch, portable generators, or even sparkplugs in engines, until Non-magic using Anthropomorphs began to integrate into society.

In essence, my mantra while writing these so far has been summed up in a quote from Arthur C. Clarke "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indiscernible from magic."
