...anyway, enough bitching over this issue that I paid good money for them to fix and it still hasn't been.
This is a song from my upcoming album, "Evil Songs for Evil People". It was the last song to be written, though it has its roots in a song I started about 5 years ago, hence it was known as '227' for quite a while.
I was in the awkward position that the song which acted as a base was obvious written to go with some lyrics but I had forgotten them and not written them into the MIDI file which the composition was filed away as. Once the composition was finished I was left with a 12.5 minute song but no words. Then I found myself saying "I am the God of Lies" after the verse, and the whole thing clicked into place. Lyrics were quickly written, based around Jake, the Trickster God from
merlin-the-bruce's comics, which can be found here: http://www.dhscomix.com - I'd start with "Way Back Home" or "Daisy/Peony" to begin with. (The icon was nicked from 'Way Back Home', sorry Merlin!)
I was also listening to Theo's "Game of Oroborous" album a lot while this was being written, hence the pipe organ segments.
Instruments used included:
Moog Voyager
Hammond SK-1 organ (Electric Piano, Pipe organ upper and lower manuals)
Raspberry Pi running Aeolus (bass pedals: Bombarde, Posaune etc)
Waldorf Streichfett string synthesizer
Nord MicroModular
Waldorf MicroWave mk1
Hammond XM-1
Roland MVS-1
Roland JV1010
Alesis DM10 drum brain
Manikin Memotron
Epiphone Thunderbird Gothic bass
The songs was recorded on an Otari MX80 24-track tape machine, with the bass and vocals being recorded on a TASCAM TSR-8 for its automatic punch-in capabilities and then dubbed onto the 2" machine afterwards.
Mixing was done onto a Studer A807 1/4" master recorder, in three sections which were then razorblade edited together for the final album version.
Some of the vocals were slowed down by running the TSR-8 fast during tracking.
The reverse reverb was added in the traditional manner, by flipping the tape upside-down and dubbing reverb onto a spare track. I even made a video of that, but I keep forgetting to upload it.
Cabbages and oranges give power to my ever-faithful minions
My faithful minions
Confusion and illusion aren't strong enough to change my foes' opinions
Their fixed opinions
Feathers, leaves and faith are all you need to make forbidden magic work
As gods go, I'm a jerk
If you dare then take a care since worshipping me brings you persecution
Such persecution
If you're caught the trial's short and tends to end with public execution
Grim execution
They might kill my followers but some they'll never recognise
I am the God of Lies.
Long ago as some will know I tried to take control of all creation
Yeah, all creation
Now exiled I am reviled, my worshippers risk death and condemnation
Yeah, condemnation
If you kill my followers you'll find your nights are filled with screams
I am the God of Dreams
What you've done strikes me as fun so I'll reward you in my usual manner
My charming manner
I'll change your ears, astound your peers, a curse that's not a curse, it's more a banner
A noble banner
Through your pranks you risk your life to worship me... I guess that's kind of odd
I am the Trickster God

Oh: Mixdown side, the desk is a Soundcraft MFXi-2 (I really wanted the MPM without the FX, but they were out of stock and I was in a hurry). The observant may notice that this is a 20-channel desk - tracks 1-2 on the tape are unused (1 is susceptible to edge damage), if I really need it I might look into running trk2 into one of the unused stereo pairs. Track 24 holds the timecode, and 23 is left as a guard band to avoid it leaking into the audio.
The mixer runs out through an SPL Vitalizer Jack for stereo expansion, and a TL Audio C5021 for slight bus compression and tweaking the L/R balance. Reverb was added during mixdown using a Strymon Blue Sky pedal, which I modified to always boot into reverb mode. It's simulating an EMT plate, and doing it really well, I might add.

beautiful desks i learnt on a soundcraft series 2 a Yamaha O1V, A&H ilive d112 and TL audio VTC however now i have a A&H GLD80 and an old Yamaha analogue desk and i forgot to say well done on using analogue mixing techniques it truly is an art form wish i had the space to run analogue
Thanks! It was a lot of fun to do.
The other song I really like on the 'Evil Songs' album is 'Red Queen Rising', but it's a bit less conventional, not least because I tried to fake a female vocalist with tape varispeed.
Red Queen does have a wider use of mellotron, as well, with the 3-violins and flutes sounds used throughout. There's a demo of that here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/16824447/ ...the final version is on the bandcamp page, or see my latest journal for links where it can be had for free. The demo had some digital editing in the middle, on the final version it was razor-edited. If I remember correctly there was some razor work on 'Jake' too, but that was more to help with mixing than for stylistic effect.
