I've seen the pilot and the second episode of the new Lion King spin-off, The Lion Guard, and I have rather bad opinions about it. I never really liked Kiara, but I hate the way they changed her personality. the scenario is really tacky, well it's Disney- style child- friendly. the shoulder (cutie) marks are plain dumb. I don't get why they chibi-fied all the characters, and the design of Fuli is really killing me... I could write more, but I don't care enough to spend my time on it xD
in spite of it all I felt inspired enough to create some designs based on the cave paintings of the past Guard. I almost forgot how much fun it was to design TLK characters, it's been quite long since I've done any adoptables, so... here you go! four pretty guys for you to adopt! I really tried to make each of them look unique, not like another recolor. hope I succeeded at least by a bit c:

I'm glad you like them! I imagine Tembo to be really buff, but calm and friendly personality-wise, a big teddy bear <3 Kuthu is definitely the youngest of them all, and a typical daredevil, clever, but teased to be stupid due to his insane ideas ;)

Personally I love it. I'm really glad seeing lion king lively again as it's my most favorite Disney movie.
The thing is, Disney no longer craters to all audience. Their older movies and shows included content that even adults could really get into, even dark references that made Disney questionable if they really were trying to terrify kids for life.
But now it's just cheesy cutesy frozen animation, or simplified cartoon artwork where even the bad guys are hardly bad.
I think adults over think kids tv to much. Such as MLP, or the newer TMNT moive. If you over analyze it yeah it seems bad, but for a kid under 10 it's the best thing ever.
But I guess I'm really just trying to say for older audiences watching these things you'd have to remember it is admitted at kids after all. And shows like teen titans, with all it's amazingly deep content doesn't exist much because partens complain more than ever about it being "not suitable for younger kids".

I'm happy something's going on with TLK, I was shocked when I heard some of my cousins who are just like 3-5 years younger don't know about this movie o: new series and mechandise might draw some attention to the original (and the sequel which was not that bad too).
I had an interesting conversation with my professor lately, who's an animator and director with a great experiencem, about the way children percept cartoons. some people consider children's shows to be impossible to transfer artistic values. I think that's not true. it's a known fact you should not use much of shot gradation and the storyline shouldn't be too difficult to follow, but it doesn't mean you can use tacky tricks and naive ideas because children won't consider them believable. I'm glad TLG is coming out and I'll probably watch all the episodes, it just hurts me they didn't try to do it better ;)
