The names they gave these things were ludicrous.

Wasn't everything about digimon ludicrous?
I mean...besides that. That thing as such a complicated design! WHY?! It's so hard work to animate and there are this edges, tubes etc. like wtf. XD
But I still like it :>

True dat. The thing that threw me off the most was how their forms were utterly different down the chain, like how Candlemon (literally a candle with eyes) digivolved into Wizardmon.

It's because they're composed of data, so Digimon are actually supposed to work by being very versatile in their evolution paths. The anime doesn't really show this, but in the card game (which came before), and in the video games, Digimon have all different Digivolutions and what they Digivolve into has a lot to do with external forces/their environment/how you nurture them/etc. And because they're made of data, when they're Digivolving, they're really just re-configuring their own digital code, which would account for why some of their evolution paths can get so weird.

Of course, I didn't realize this when I was younger, so I got really pissed off when I rented a Digimon video game and my Agumon Digivolved into Bakemon. >:T

It's because the anime came later. Digimon started as virtual pets, so the first Digimon had basic but recognizable designs (like Tyrannomon, which was the very first Digimon created), and then a lot of other designs were thought up while creating the card game. The anime didn't come until about 2 years after the card game. Apparently a lot of the way the designs look come from Kenji Watanabe being influenced by American comics and him wanting to make his characters look stronger and cooler. :D
