The sign on that house translates to “Schiller lived here and wrote the poem 'Ode to Joy' in 1785”. It served as the text for the fourth movement in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (1824), and has also become the anthem for the European Union. There are many other monuments for the playwright Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (1759 – 1805) all across Germany, the oldest being in Stuttgart (my birthplace).
