I experiment with music.
It's easy to write music without melody, and effortless to write music without harmony. Is it possible to write good music without a sense of beat?
This short piece is a first answer to that question. It's a spacey instrument with slow attack and delay and a heavy echo chamber that just follows the circle of thirds.
It's possible to write music without a sense of beat. I'm going to look for other ways to write music with that weird restriction. Wish me luck!

I have about three or four ideas. One of them is easy to understand, but very hard to do well:
Talking.
Take a sample of ordinary conversation. Not metered conversation. Not poetry. Just talking.
Then listen for the music under the conversation. Add notes.
I've done it once before, and I'll try it again with a different sound sample.... and, hopefully, better music will come out.

If you want proof that music doesn't need to have a felt beat, just listen to Gustav Holst's Neptune -- which is my favourite of his Planets, and my favourite piece he ever wrote, for that matter. It's seven minutes of no discernible beat. And it's unbelievable. My sister got me a vinyl recording of the Planets for my birthday, and listening to Neptune with such a pure sound (I really think digital takes a little bit away from the effect. :P) is AMAZING.
Hrm. I have a copy of Holst's The Planets --
-- okay. I'll admit it. I'm madly, wildly, and passionately in lust with Mars, the Bringer of War. It's permanently on my iPod. It's on my most favorite list of music, and I listen to it every month.
I'll listen to Neptune tonight, though. Thanks for the suggestion!
