I've always liked paintings that incorporate symbolic objects, or objects and symbols relevant to a story. The client had a very extensive story around this king, and I thought it would be a great opportunity for a low key image with more symbolism.
The most important people who lost their lives during the King's reign are represented by the props in this illustration.
The runes on the wall behind him read "One day a king will come and the sword will rise again" (from Excalibur, 1981)
The wall is my favorite part... or just the carved stone in general. :P Very proud of that, even though it took the least amount of time compared with the rest of the piece.

This presents a very interesting story about what looks like a very interesting story. Your colors and style are really beautiful and the composition is awesome, keeping the king integrated at the center and making the eyes whoosh up with the wings and the smoke into the tapestries and the nice wall. The shield and peacock feather arrow are also very nice details.
