When animals considered to be "prey" by the apex predators of the world begin to band together for safety, where does it leave those caught in between?
Namely, a pair of pine martens, carnivores and flesh-eaters themselves, but small enough to be considered food for the bears, wolves and gluttons of the forest and field. They're on a journey to seek sanctuary with the rabbits, squirrels and other prey that have gathered to Oren--but they don't know if welcome or condemnation will meet them.

He's too caring and go get 'em. It never ends well for them when they got someone they care for traveling with them. Now, if for some heartless reason the author turned around and killed off the young marten, I would be both devastated and completely okay with it... kinda like watching a Doctor Who episode.
This actually happens a lot even in the entertainment industry. The writing of the show Lost was tailored to what its fans were predicting. When a plot was predicted by fans, the writers would steer clear of that prediction and change the story because, like you said, why bother if they already know? It resulted in an infamously bad ending. xD So in other words, stay on target! Even if people predict something it doesn't lessen its meaning, and how it will affect the rest of the story. :D
