All I know is, when a DM makes you roll on trusting a new NPC... you already know you can't trust him.

Oh, and to answer the question in the title "Would YOU trust this gnoll?". Well that depends more on his personality and reputation than his appearance, but based on what we can infer from his choice of clothing and his expression I'd say the initial answer is the same as the general answer as to whether you can trust a rational and intelligent evil character: Sure you can... as long as you understand his motivations and whatever you are doing is in HIS best interest and you are sure he knows it.
