Look at the wolf, ears back in submission, a gentle face telling the fox he's cool. The fox however, ears forward, alert, he is the lesser predator.

Their facial expressions (The fox) were hard for me to decode. For a canine it seemed kind of detached... Maleable, compliant, gentle, and sweet, but also kind of detached. But nobody (until recently) has been trying to domesticate foxes. So they have a long way to go.

The ears were the first thing I was looking at and you are right. Something else to keep in mind too is the wolfdog is looking up to what he sees as a bigger dog or canine, it doesn't register that the fox is being held at the time the photo was taken.
