I've made it a habit to do 2-4 pose sketches for my commissioners, either multiple poses of one idea, like here, or doing different ideas, then let them pick.

I don't use reference pictures that often, if I do it's usually to get a pose idea more then anything. But sometimes I need to look up some species to get an idea or re-fresh my mind, like looking up cats.
But nop, not really! The sketch won't always look like this, it can be much rougher, some parts get erased. Depends on my pose sketch, sometimes I have to do a lot of re-sketching while often I can use it as a template.

Oh! If you meant character references, then yes! Sometimes I use them for the pose sketch, but the pose sketch is not meant to look like the character at all (just does sometimes, unique bodied characters I keep in mind!). So I usually just take a quick glance to do the pose, then actually look look at the ref when sketching.
